It's not the story I really have problems with, it's the blatant sexualization and objectification of Lightning by Toriyama, which has now spilled over into actual gameplay. I know the costume changes is nothing new (FFX-2) and has significance to the gameplay, but it's disgusting to me that this is what they do with their miraculous "look at us we have a female lead!!!!" character.

Toriyama's behaviour in interviews, press releases and just all around is shameful. He's the equivalent of a Japanese Chris-chan.

She's just a few thousand lines of code, a 3D model, and a voice actor. I'd agree with you if she were more of a character, but come on. Her entire purpose is, without exaggeration, to be a source of angst and eye candy*. At least we don't have characters like Fang getting ****ty Halloween costume versions of themselves.

*Note to self: Make a tumblr called Angst and Eye Candy, sell it to same kid in an emo phase for a lot of money.

Are you seriously trying to validate her sexualization this way? Characters in books are just lines of text--is their treatment and portrayal meaningless? And what about movies--those characters are portrayed by actual people, or are they meaningless because they read off a script? Sexualizing characters goes hand in hand with objectifying (or DEHUMANIZING) them. If we cease to see them as humans, we can treat them however we wish. This is not even to mention how problematic and hurtful to see women in the media treated this way, but it's a slippery slope. Once it's okay for you to objectify female video game characters, you can objectify the women in books, movies, TV, and then eventually, your own life.

It's typical to reduce something to a sum of its parts in order to beat an opinion you have no actual argument about. It's like how you can say that humans are just sacks of meat and the brain is just a bunch of impulses

It is if, like Lightning, they're only there to provide a source of angst and eye candy. If they're actual characters, I do have problems with it. I would hate it if official Persona 4 material dehumanized Chie and Yukiko like Toriyama is doing with Lightning. Lightning is such a bland character in my eyes that I have no problem with treating her like an object. I feel the same about some real humans, particularly politicians, certain celebrities, and almost everyone I knew in high school.

The way I see it, the actors and actresses are real and thus have a right to decide whether or not characters in their likenesses are overly sexualized. Just look at that crap with the nude model of Ellen Page in Beyond: Two Souls. She didn't sue, but she definitely could have won if she had because of that "no nudity" clause in all of her contracts. I seriously doubt that Maaya Sakamoto and Ali Hillis would still be voicing Lightning if they had a problem with what Toriyama was doing with her.

Maybe I'm misreading you here, but are you really trying to argue against my point with the concept that my entire point is based on? To clarify, my point is that there is no problem with dehumanizing characters that don't even have enough depth to seem human anyway.

And yet nobody has any problem with men in media being treated this way. Why is it a problem when women are objectified, but not men? I agree with the sentiment, but they way you worded it is just as sexist as I'm sure it looks like I'm being right now.

Are you really pulling a slippery slope argument? You're smarter than that.

    Need I go on?

To be fair, who are we to say that our lives have any more meaning than any of the inanimate objects surrounding us? The only thing that affects any of the decisions we make is the state of the universe 16 billion years ago right before the big bang.

My name is Neogaf and I play video games for the story and not the gameplay part of the video game.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with one of my friends:

Sad how far that's gone lately and just how hard I have to look to find an actual video game in a video game store.

Final Fantasy used to be played almost entirely for the story and characters back in the game. The old ones generally have mindless gameplay, so that was definitely not the draw. So when a new Final Fantasy game comes out, and you don't like the story or the characters, it's not exactly strange to not like the game. (I really liked XIII-2, despite the story)

Usually I am all about gameplay, but story has always been a primary focus in FF games. They're long with plenty of cutscenes. It's hard to enjoy the game when your fun gameplay experience is constantly interrupted with a story you find lame and characters you're not interested in.

That being said, while XIII-2 was an improvement to XIII, I wouldn't say it's anything that special either. So yeah.
