He's so underrated, people don't give him that much love :-( I loved him, he had emotion, he had the charm and he was my first Doctor and I'll always remember that he holds a special place for me when it comes to Doctor Who :-)

He is a dece actor but he's a bit of a sourpuss (I mean he was supposed to be) but comparatively he isn't as loved by fans for obvious reasons imo

He's not nearly as energetic or quirky or funny to be honest

he was kind of grouchy until the very end

I don't think the Doctor has to be energetic to be a good Doctor.
I think 9's story was more like "he's depressed because its right after the Time War and his whole race is dead"
    and he's responsible for it
he than learns to cheer up by traveling with Rose (I despise the living hell out of Rose though but still) you can tell he's changed after his "everybody lives" line from The Doctor Dances.

The only reason I can think of is that he left too soon. It's kind of a shame because Eccleston apparently really enjoyed the role, but couldn't stand the environment backstage.

My sister loved Chris Eccleston so much that when we watched him turn into David Tennant (On Netflix, of course), she got so mad that she stormed out of the room yelling and slammed her door. Then she refused to watch the Tennant series for a long time. Then she finally gave him a chance, and she ended up loving them both equally. Then David Tennant turned into Matt Smith and she stormed out of the room, yelling (and crying that time, because he didn't want to go...) and she slammed her door and didn't give Matt Smith a chance until a long time later.

It's not gonna happen this time, though, because she and I both just took one look at Peter Capaldi's face, and we both fell in love. We're still probably gonna cry when Matt Smith leaves, because... MATT SMITH!!! But then we're both already on board with the twelfth Doctor.

He's not underrated at all, a lot of people like him to be honest, he pretty much invigorated the new generation of DW and without him or someone of his calibre then the show would've flopped.
