I'm learning on my own, and I've learned the D, C and G major chords. Should I continue like this with my online guide (here: http://guitar.about.com/library/blguitarlessonarchive.htm ), or learn the actual notes on the strings? Thanks in advance!
It'd be a good idea to eventually learn what fret on which string is which note, but it's not necessary, considering you can play a lot of songs just using TAB.
Here's an example of TAB: It shows which frets to press on which string, it's mostly used for picking rather than chords.
Ive played for almost 2 years. and all i know is from the internet. i know a few chords, but just playing on my own, my strumming has gotten alot better! try songs you know ( like the bands/songs) you listen to. it really helps to try and learn the songs you listen to all the time. go to www.ultimate-guitar.com to find the chords to your favorite songs.
It depends on whether you just want to jam around, or play real songs and written music, or even compose some yourself. If you want to play written music, I suggest that you learn the strings and notes and most of the major and minor chords, and the '5'-chords would be good to know too, cuz they are extremely simple, and used in many rock songs... If you just wanna jam around, learning all of that isn't necessary, but it would make the playing a lot easier. You can probably find all the chords and stuff either on the internet, or in some simple music book, they shouldn't be too expensive...
