Oh well. If it ever gets explained, I'll be happy. If not, well, at least I have something to complain about besides the weather.

I'm gonna try my best to get through this plothole logically -- well, as logically as anyone can explain a plotpoint in Who, anyway.

Recall that in Let's Kill Hitler, River used up all her remaining regeneration energy to save the Doctor. One could argue that this should've given him more regens, and while that was the most widely accepted theory I'd seen, it clearly wasn't the case given the events in Time of the Doctor. Still, all that regen energy wasn't necessarily... well, necessary. She probably could've used one regen tops and still saved him, but instead she packed all that energy into one kiss and he got it. As far as we know, she'd regenerated only two times before -- from the child in Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon to infant Mels and from Mels to the River we all know -- which left her with ten regens to give to Eleven. Imagine all that raw energy inside of one alien? Good, because that's relevant.

Fast forward to Angels Take Manhattan where he gives back some of that energy. Tell me, where could it have possibly gone in the time between? One could argue that the TARDIS/time vortex might've absorbed some of it, but there's no concrete proof of that being possible, so we'll dismiss it for now. No, I think that energy only allows for regeneration when it originated in a specific individual, in this case River Song, which means that once it'd been transferred to the Doctor, it was converted into raw regen energy. Eleven's taken quite a few bumps and bruises between mid-S6 and the end of S7P1, so one could also argue that this energy has allowed him to heal more quickly, or even to feel less pain. But again, no concrete proof, so we'll just dismiss it in this argument. I think that Eleven must've used up quite a bit of River's energy to essentially come back to life -- because he WAS dead and there were no more regenerations to be used, hence the lack of glow in the episode -- and what was left over never left his body. He used the moment to get rid of it and repay his debt to her, so to speak.

So yeah, very convoluted possible explanation for a simple, dumb plot hole. I could major in New Who, I swear. The writers would be lucky to have such a wealth of bullshit explanations.
