    Ok. Supposing time travel did exist (not saying it does, just asking hypothetically): when the traveller goes back in time, do they take their molecules with them, or do they create a new body from molecules that are there?

    That question has been plauging me for a year now.

    @Daxa: Good morning!

    I think the more important question, that would go with teleportation too, is whether or not it's the same 'soul' as the original. If I were to teleport, would it be destroying me and creating a new person with my memories and personality, or would it still genuinely be me?

    Good question. And if you were a "different" person, how would your memories be recreated? Would you lose some during transit?

    A friend of mine had an interesting theory. He thought that history would always fix itself if you changed it. In other words, Haya's Grandfather Paradox wouldn't apply because your grandmother would meet someone else and have children anyways. Appearance might change, but there wouldn't be less people in the future. The example he gave me was that a group of superpowered teenagers went into the past (he was going to write a story about it) and accidentally kill one of their ancestors. The descendant of that ancestor's hair suddenly turns blonde. The changes could have been small like that, or as big as changing gender or age. But none of them suddenly stopped existing.

    You guys are having a discussion on time travel? I was just watching something that sorta had to do with the theory you just talked about Lox, it said something to the effect that even if you go back and change a major event in earth's history, it'll correct itself. The example being that if you go back and kill Adolf Hitler, someone else would grow up and do the same thing he did to correct time's flow.
    Can't for the life of me remember what it was from..might have been Star Trek, but I can't recall.

    This assumes matter actually moves. If time travel exists, then I will assume that what transfers is not matter, but information. Imagine that the universe is like a hard drive, and that we are actually just information located at specific places on it. When we walk to another spot, the universe does not move, but the information that made us up does. You can overwrite information pretty easily, or the rest could be moved to fill in the empty parts of the hard drive; that is, space.

    Or, rather, world lines. You transfer information, and instead of actually going back in time, you change the present world to one where that information was there at that point in time. If I send a body back in time, I change the present world to one where that body was always there. I will not remember sending it back unless I am special somehow, but if you could remember across world lines, you would know that something changed.

    Or it could have something to do with quantum physics and mechanics. Something not being there until you are looking, et cetera.

    Philosophically, memory is all that people have to go on. When you wake up in the morning, how do you know that the you who wakes up is genuinely you?

    Another possible answer to both of these is that it teleports you by transferring the entire block of molecules and replaces the place where you were in the present with the molecules from where you end up in the past.

    Furthermore, the conservation of matter is not absolute. Another solution is that the universe would simply expand to make room for you, because space is expanding infinitely and is not made of molecules. Or your molecules would try to force the molecules around you away. In a worst case scenario, you could cause molecule fusion or fission and initiate a nuclear explosion just by appearing.

    Do you mind if I print that? I'm trying to keep all possible answers together.

    Well what I mean is that I see through my own eyes, obviously, and if I were to die, I would cease to do so. So if I were to use a teleporter, would I die and be replaced by somebody else whose eyes I wouldn't be seeing through, or would it still be 'me'?

    If that makes no sense at all, I appologise. My mind works oddly.

    It is the same question. When you wake up, how do you know that you did not die and get replaced in the night?

    It makes sense, but my question is, what is "you"? You is whatever you are in the present. You from five minutes ago is not you, and you from yesterday is not you. If you were faced with a situation yesterday and then again today, you would react differently today. So, you are not the same person as the one who would have done what you did yesterday.

    At any point in time, the only thing you have to go for yourself is your memory, and that is far from concrete. So "you" are the one who is reading this, and that is all. For all you know, what happened yesterday before you went to sleep never happened, and you never did those things. For all you know, it was not you who made those choices. The same with what you did five minutes ago.
