Welp, someone on Fanfiction.net told me to "please update soon!", concerning my Pokemon fanfic.

Why do I get the urge to disregard this completely and self criticise my writing for another month?

 

I know that feeling. :\

 

Because that's the sign of a (somewhat) humble writer.
They're not just like "lol, my stuff is totes amazing and I am above everyone", they're more like "my crap sucks, but I like writing it so I'll update for you all."

 

Being humble is not really a good thing. A good writer is somebody that knows they are good, but also knows where they can improve, and also acknowledges that not everybody has to like what they do.

 

Well, would you rather a humble person who recognize that they're not the best writer in the world or a conceded snob who truly believes that everyone else is inferior.

Humility isn't such a bad thing either...

 

Those are both negative extremes. I wouldn't trust either's work.

 

You write/wrote fanfic? Or do you just mean writing in general?

The latter is definitely how I've been feeling about my fanfic for the last month now. I'm more than half way done with Chapter 2 (the last time I worked on it WAS last month ;;) but I can't stop thinking that it sucks so much, that the story is going to be too clichéd, etc.
Also the fact that school is eating up all my creativity and most of my free time doesn't help. Not to mention that I can't stop watching anime >.>

And I feel guilty about not updating it. I really do. I also feel guilty when I see people adding it to their favourites on that site. It makes me cry. WHY ARE YOU FAVOURITING THIS SHIT?! D:

 

However, many people deprecate themselves and their work and still show them anyway. Then when they get praised and told, "Oh, don't beat yourself up; this is great!", they feel like they did a good job. That is not humility, it is self-defense. They fear criticism from others, so they criticize themselves. They do this in hopes of absolving themselves of feeling bad if someone does criticize it. "Yeah; I know it's bad, don't judge me." That is no recipe for improvement.

A level of perfectionism is good, but confidence is important just as well.

I won't deny the importance of confidence.

So guys.

I'll spend the next 3 hours in a party I don't want to go to with my brother and his friend (Who is a showerbag). Luckily I'll take my 3DS to play Pokémon Black but I'll probably get trolled by said friend because he basically makes fun of everything I do ._. I don't get why I haven't punched him in the face yet. If there's wifi I'll spam you with posts from there
