I know some people do because they actually take notes, not to mess about on facebook. Personally, I find it too much of a distraction so I don't bring it to class unless we're going over stocks. Also, I find that writing information down on paper helps me remember it better.

I'd say no. If they aren't in the class as a provided material for all students it would be a distraction and is not needed there. I could see them at a lecture perhaps where you want to take notes as you would with a recorder device but otherwise, they just aren't right to be there and students could be doing anything on them other than paying attention to the class itself.

Yes! Cuz school sucks anyway and they should make it up to us by letting us play Sims 2 in maths class!

No, you shouldn't be aloud to have laptops, they distract you too much. Plus, writing notes by hand make it easier for you to remember the stuff, and it's a lot more personal that way.

I am torn between yes and no, but I am going with no because all I would do is get onto Youtube and make things on WMM. My grades would slip and I would get my laptop taken away from me.

I'd say yes. Those who cares truly about their grades would not be tempted to do stupid stuff with it during class.

Generally speaking, I'd say it's acceptable only under a certain condition (like a certain GPA must be obtained or something like that)

I'd have to say no. At my secondary school they provided a student with a laptop so he could take notes etc - it was a trial i believe. The student basically used the laptop for anythin' else but takin' notes n' studyin' n' disrupted the class. The laptop was removed n' that was the last i saw of that.

I think students would be too tempted to use their laptops for other means than school work.

My answer has to be yes. Not only would it be so much funner but also, it could make things easier... and it would mean that if we type out our notes into a document then, paper/trees will be saved on no ink will be wasted. Not only that, you could secretly play games and do other non-related stuff without getting caught... who cares about the boring stuff ya need to listen to over and over again anyway? >.>

It would be awesome though if our school was allowed to do that.. but eh, it's not -.-

Okay, well they would never allow it, but it would be awesome if they would!

I find it ironic that people who say yes, quite a few say you'd be doing other things than school work on them, which is exactly the reason they shouldn't be permitted. xD

i would personally say no because it distracts people around laptop users as well as the owners of the laptop. i find that i kind of stare at that person's laptop for a while, especially if they're playing a game or something. i remember ONE time when someone was watching Spiderman 2 DURING CLASS, and i couldn't take my eyes off of it, lol. the guy had headphones on so there was no outside noise but still a distraction to people sitting around him.
i agree with what you say, though i can see why they would love to have a laptop in class XD

That would be the reason why i wouldn't want one. I'm so easily distracted. xD

I believe laptops should be allowed in school, but only for the people that need them. I can think of two types of people.

The first type is people with disabilities. One of my closest friends has abnormal fingers, that vary considerably. This defect doesn't prevent him from writing with a pen, but it is a lot easier when he can type. It's both faster and neater. A different person I know has a mild mental disability, which only effects a few things about her. One of the effects caused by it is a shakiness of the hands, especially when concentrating. She finds it difficult to write, and typing is much, much easier. These people need laptops to in class to help them.

The other type of people are the more academic students. My school's high school (years eight to ten) isn't very large, with up to seventy people. I'm in the year ten class, and like the others, it's quite split in half - between the academic students and the less academic students. Those who put a greater effort into their studies and work could really do with laptops. They provide excellent resources, as well as programs such as MS Word, and the opportunity to type work and soon have it neatly printed out. This makes it easier for those people, who plan to get a higher education, to complete a higher standard of work. This is much more efficient than using a school's booked out computer room, which can often contain unreliable computers.

Laptops can be misused in the classroom, but they can also be used in very good ways. They are made to benefit people. And some people really need their beneifits. Not everyone should use a laptop at school, but it would be helpful if certain people always could.

Heh, I wouldn't want them in the class. I would be wayyyyy too tempted to sneak on all the sites I love. Hell, the teacher would ask me the answer and I'd look at the screen and be like "erm.... *looks at KHV*... Kingdom Hearts?" "Wrong, Pythagorus' theorem!"

    xDD

So yeah, its a no for me.

A dude in my class once broke his hand so they let him bring in a laptop. Gawd, he ended up playing rap music on media player. Thank god there was no internet connection, he reckoned he would have been on a porn site.

In my class, one of the girls constantly uses her laptop, I think they are acceptable in schools, but from different areas.

Not unless you are in college. I really think that you should only have them in the classroom if you have a high level of responsibility.

It depends on what grade you are talking about, I see no issue with College students being permitted to use Latops in class, however I think that it wouldn't work in Highschools and lower very well.

It all depends on the student, some students would be responsible enough for sure, wilst others (as this thread has shown) would spend all their time pissing about.

I personally prefer taking my notes by hand and then typing them up later. For one thing I can write notes faster and easier on paper than I do when typing, for another it means when I type them up the information is being processed by my mind again.

So do I think it is acceptable? Yes, in certain circumstances I see no issue with it at all. It isn't the Laptops that force students to behave irresponsibly, it is the students.

Well, I suppose my point is wrong about the High School part, seeing we have yrs8-10. Yeah, there's defintely too much irresponsibility there.

And heck, I'd spend time going to sites I want too... I guess laptops are just more suitable for more serious ages.

lol about the porn, because a person in our high school was on a porn site, and printed it, but it ended up printing in the secretary office....
