    The last end of the world prediction was a year ago. So, people were wrong in the past; does that make every prediction false from now on? I'm not saying I believe the prediction, but cannot be 100% sure one way or another.

    ...No. It's possible that the world could end at any day. Though it's not probable. Scientists just say "it's highly unlikely it'll end this year". The one guarantee is that the world will fry in a few billion years.

    Actually, not really. A gamma ray burst from the other side of the universe is practically impossible to see coming.

    "But that's not likely!" Some might say. Well...it's happened before in the last decade. A strong enough one can tear apart all the stuff keeping us nice and safe from the Sun.
