Yup! Disney almost released what many thought would be an anime, with Seth Kearsley as director and writer. Disney pulled back on the series, but Kearsley has released a storyboard his Deviantart page on what would have been part of the pilot episode from back in 2002. Also found are some words on his experience with the series, as well as an interview with KHUnion.

I heard about this yesterday, they really should've made this a thing, or at least they should after KH3 is released and we have the whole timeline. That way it won't actually interfere with the story of the game. To have released a series just after the first game came out would have really complicated things I guess. So they should definitely consider doing this after KH3 is done...AND THEN WE'LL HAVE A KINGDOM HEARTS SERIES GUYS OMG!!! :P

I'm wondering if it will be a cartoon, or will it be a 3d-style animation?

But the thought of a KH TV series excites me a lot. I hope they will be able to pull it off in the future.

Oh no, I just jinxed it didn't I?!

I'm almost kind of glad they didn't. Not they I don't want a Kingdom Hearts anime, but it would be better to make it after KH3 simply because the storyline of Kingdom Hearts, while understood, has many plot holes and bull****s in the story that's it's better to piece things together a little better when storyboarding it for an animated series.

Seriously they would even do some "filler" like the manga did, giving a new take on the organization and such.. they could even put new worlds to Sora visit (like Hawaii to meet with Stitch!)

When people keep saying they want a KH movie, I always thought a television series would be so much better. It allows more character exploration, and allow deeper storytelling.

However, even with the renaissance of great television recently, the KH narrative is just something that wouldn't work with TV or movies. It probably would've been something good back in the series simpler days, but not now.

I think the closest thing we could get is a short series of the year Sora was asleep, and look more into Kairi, but I really doubt that it would be green lit.

And the world traveling is perfect for serialized television and season-spanning arcs. This alone would draw me to it. In fact, the more I think about it, a KH tv show makes all kinds of sense. At first I was like "NONONO YOU CAN'T DO THAT" but now I really want it lol. And I don't see why Disney doesn't want this. It could potentially be a massive cash cow for them. First of all it's Disney so it allows for them to bring sooo many of their properties back into focus, but there's also myriad elements to appeal to both boys and girls. Merchandising for the show could be insane. Man, how is this not a thing?

Hopefully they get nagged to hell by everyone and actually go ahead with this! After KHIII, this would be a perfect way to sum up everything that has happened in the series in the form of an anime to mark the end of the Xehanort saga and the start of a new chapter.

I always wondered that if they did something like this whether the animation would be Disney like or anime like, I have always seen it as a more Japanese style but these pictures look more Disney to me and I love it! I do kind of want this but worry about how it would be made, we already know the story of Kingdom hearts so they would have to find something new to spice it up like they did with the manga a bit.

maybe instead of a tv/movie series how about a internet tv series like H+ and halo 4 forward onto dawn ? it would be awsome if they made a little internet series like what halo 4 did.

To be honest, I'd much rather an anime-esque KH series. I can definitely imagine the Disney style working, but I'm just biased towards anime artwork.

But yeah, a KH series would be great if they stuck to the story and went into depth with the characters' backstories (the organization's backstories from when they were human, cthe BBS gang's background, etc.). Hell, I'd be happy just to see a SoL of Kairi's hs days in-between KH1 & KH2.

What did it do to spice things up?

I suppose i just mean it was different from the game xD I haven't read all the mangas but it was just tiny bits that were different from the series I've got to know inside out.

Considering they opted not to do this in favor of making them games, I say good call. But I would also like it if they ever decided to go back to this idea. Might be a good way to shake up the fanbase as I know there are some people that are looking to jump after KH3.

Though Disney likes to keep a tight grip on their IP and I have trouble picturing this inside the general tone of Disney channel.

I'm not entirely sure how to see this. On one had, it's KH, and I love anything KH. On the other, it might not be as good as we might have hoped. Honestly, if this isn't done right it's prone to riots and hate mail (ex. The last airbender movie). Why did they stop production anyway?

To people saying KH's story wouldn't work, I heartily disagree. Kingdom Hearts has really good fundamental ideas, what it lacks is good writing. Put it in the hands of a person who doesn't greenlight dialog like "Who will I have ice cream with?" and you're taking huge steps towards unlocking KH's potential as a legitimately emotional story
      Just
      get good writers

Was the ice cream line a bit out of left field? Yeah. But consider the context of Days: As far as Roxas knows, all a friend is is someone you have ice cream with. So it's not so much Roxas being "ABLUBLUBLUB I NEED SOMEONE TO EAT ICE CREAM WITH ME" as it is "Who else will be my friend?"

I'll grant that that could have been conveyed better, though.

A lot of people have tried to convince me the line is secretly good, but it's really not. All the context in the world can't save that line, especially when you realize that when Xion 'crystallizes' she's actually turning into sea salt ice cream
But even with the context it still makes Roxas sound like a self centred dick. "Oh no, you're dying? But what about MY feelings?"
