Sora finished turning the knob before slowly opening the door, relieved that the door didn't creak or make any sounds that would have announced their arrival.

 

Roxas exhaled through his nose silently, his eyes on the door as it opened.

 

Sora pushed the door open enough for both of them to enter, and Sora took one step in. The area was empty so far, but he could hear a faint conversation echo off the walls and enter his ears. It sounded like it was coming from the living room, but he couldn't quite tell just yet.

"Kairi, I'm nervous," Namine admitted to her friend as she sat on a stool, guitar on her lap as she gazed at Kairi. "You sure this'll work out alright?" The day after the ball, Namine had called Kairi with an idea. She had suggested that they work on a duet together, singing one of the songs that had been played at the ball. To her surprise, Kairi had quickly agreed, and they had spent every day together working on it since that day. But now Namine wasn't nearly as confident about it as Kairi was. At least, that was how it seemed to be, anyway.

 

Roxas silently followed Sora in. As he very quietly started to shut the door, he heard faint voices, Namine's first, followed by Kairi's.

Kairi looked at her friend next to her as she sat on a stool, guitar resting on her lap for the moment. "Well, you said you've done this once with Roxas before, right?" Kairi had agreed to get together with Namine and work on a duet, singing a song that the blonde had heard at the ball. Kairi had never really had a reason to use her guitar before, but now that she did, she was happy to be doing this. But at the same time, she was kind of nervous, though she didn't let it show; she wanted to assure Namine that this was going to be great, and that the boys would love it.

 

Sora took one step forward, letting Roxas pull the door shut. He listened to the conversation the best he could, though the girls were too quiet for him to specifically pick out what they were saying.

"...Yeah," Namine answered hesitantly. However, that fact really didn't calm her nerves. What if Roxas didn't like it? That was her only concern, really. At the ball, he had given her such a nice surprise, and she wanted to do the same with him. That was what motivated her not to just give up this, even though she was very nervous about this whole thing.

 

Roxas shut the door silently, furrowing his eyebrows at the sound of his name. What had Namine done with him once? What were the girls talking about?

Kairi offered a small smile to Namine after noticing her hesitance. "Then don't worry. I'm sure he'll love it, Namine, especially since you've done it once for him before. I'm guessing that it's one way you two bond, right?" Kairi let her hands rest against her guitar lightly, that way it wouldn't fall off her lap. Her violet-blue eyes stayed on her blonde friend, wanting to help her become more confident.

 

Namine smiled weakly, knowing that Kairi was being as supportive as she could have been. And Namine was grateful for that, since Kairi's kind words were giving her some confidence. "I suppose," she answered with a faint smile, shifting the guitar slightly on her leg. "I just really want this to go well, you know? He's always been so sweet to me, and I want to repay him somehow."

Sora took two more steps forward, hearing the conversation a little better than before. Still though, apparently he and Roxas had walked in while they were in the middle of something, since their conversation made no sense to him.

 

Kairi smiled softly. "I understand," she said. "Roxas will probably think that this is sweet too." The girl offered her a friend a slightly bigger smile in assurance before she looked down, her eyes falling on the guitar in her lap. "You know...Sora's never really heard me do this before, so I'm not exactly sure what he'll think." Sora had never heard Kairi sing before, just hum songs on the radio or in her head.

Roxas took a few steps forward from the door, now standing slightly behind Sora as he listened to the conversation, able to hear it better here. His eyebrows were still slightly furrowed, not understanding the conversation completely. Sora and he must have walked in on the middle of the conversation, because he had no idea what was going on.

 

Sora perked up at the sound of his name, feeling even more curious now. They were talking about him? But why...? He took a few more steps forward, right beside the doorway now as he evesdropped on the girls.

"I'm sure he'll like it," Namine said reassuringly, setting her own fears aside as she comforted Kairi. Whether this turned out good or not, she was sure the boys would appreciate the effort. Still though, she wanted it to turn out well for obvious reasons.

 

Roxas bit his lip as he silently took a few steps forward. Cautiously, he peeked around Sora's form and into the living room, a little nervous about getting caught. He was relieved though when he discovered that the girl's backs were to them.

Kairi looked up at Namine, a smile coming across her face. "Yeah, he will," she agreed. Sora and Roxas were alike in one obvious way--they appreciated anything that she or Namine did for them. That was one reason why Kairi thought this would work out for the best, and because Kairi thought the song had come a long way and sounded great, after all these rehearsals.

 

Sora followed Roxas' lead, the teen turning his head around the corner. He noticed that the two girls were not facing them, and he was thankful that was the case. Still, what was going on here? He really wanted to find out.

Namine smiled at her friend, feeling a little more confident after the short pep-talk. "Want to run through it again?" she asked, holding a pick in her fingers as she gazed at Kairi.

 

Kairi's smile grew slightly. "Sure," she said softly. She looked down at her guitar as she started to set it correctly in her lap to play, a guitar pick in her hand.

Roxas' eyes widened slightly, his eyes catching onto the guitars. They were going to sing? As the girls got ready to play, Roxas slipped silently and quickly over to the other side of the doorway so he wasn't peeking around Sora. Besides, he had a better view of Namine there.

 

Namine nodded softly, shifting the guitar on her lap one more time. She let her one hand go up to the neck of the guitar as she set her fingers in the correct places, her other arm lightly leaning against the guitar as she prepared herself. After inhaling softly, she let her hand run down and over the guitar strings, playing the first chord of the song.

Sora's eyes widened in surprise, the teen just then noticing the guitars. So...that was what was happening! They were playing a song...for them. Sora felt flattered at their efforts alone as he stood there, peeking into the room as he kept his eyes on Kairi.

 

Kairi joined Namine when she started, this being how they rehearsed. Her violet-blue eyes stayed down on the guitar as she played, her hand on the neck as she moved her fingers in the right places and her other hand strung the guitar. She played the first few chords alongside the blonde, hearing her singing part about to come up.

Roxas felt surprised but also flattered to find out that the two girls were singing to him and Sora. Of course, they didn't have to go and do that; he and Sora loved Namine and Kairi just for who they were. But their efforts were flattering, and Roxas watched in silence as the girls played.

 

Namine continued to play her guitar, taking the lead slightly because she had more experience than Kairi. Namine had been playing a little longer than Kairi, since Roxas had started teaching her a little while ago. Still, this hardly made a difference now, since they were pretty much equal in skill.

Sora kept his eyes on the girls, hearing their music blend beautifully. Already it was obvious that they had put a lot of work into this, even if they hadn't started singing yet.

 

Kairi drew in a breath, preparing to sing as she continued to strum the guitar.

"Is this the whole picture
Or is it just the start?

Roxas flitted his eyes to Kairi when she started singing, never having heard her sing before.

 

Namine looked up at Kairi when she started singing before flitting her eyes back to her guitar, focusing on hitting the right chords. She suceeded, hitting everything with perfect rythmn.

Sora blinked in surprise, Kairi's angelic voice entering his ears. Have I really never heard her sing before? he wondered, keeping his eyes on Kairi. Obviously not, since he would remember such a beautiful voice if he had heard it before. His gaze stayed on Kairi as he took in the lyrics, along with her natural beauty and talent.

 

Kairi let Namine take the lead with the chords on this part of the song, Kairi playing a particular easier part, since she was practically just a beginner.

"And I'm here to stay

And I know, I'm ok

Kairi sang the rest of the lyrics on her part, finishing off with the chorus as she strummed the guitar. It faded out slightly, Namine's part coming up.

Roxas watched in absolute silence, his eyes watching both of the girls as they played. Wait a second... He knew this song...

 

Namine let her strumming quiet as she heard Kairi finish her part, recognizing that her singing part was coming up. She kept her eyes down, strumming a few more chords before she started singing her part.

"I'm seeing so much clearer

Even if I tried

Sora still was in shock when he heard Namine start singing, though his thoughts were on Kairi. She had such a beautiful voice, and the lyrics she sang...They were very, very powerful. They touched Sora's heart as he listened to the rest of the song, keeping his eyes on Kairi despite the fact that she was no longer singing.

 

Kairi played the guitar next to Namine, glancing up at her friend with a small smile on her face as she did. After a few seconds, she looked back down, staying on rhythm.

Roxas' eyes were glued to Namine as she sang, her beautiful voice entering his ears. His eyes softened slightly as he listened to the lyrics she sang, and how strong they were. It seemed as if they were coming from the heart, and it touched him as he listened. His blue eyes were stuck on her form as he watched, silence overtaking him.
