KH - Fast Food Madness! V2

Kairi kept her gaze locked on his eyes as more thoughts entered her mind. Maybe he shouldn't have been there, at the battle yesterday. But he had gotten there somehow... Had her heart called him there? Their hearts were connected, after all. So...maybe he was meant to be there, as much as she hated him to have been when all he did was get hurt in the process of eliminating Dark Kairi. Perhaps it was destiny, and with destiny came the hardships of life. Unfortunately, fighting off Kairi's...darkness had to be one of them.

 

Sora tried his best to read Kairi's eyes, though he couldn't get too far. They were...harder than usual. Not with hatred or anger or anything, but just what appeared to be deep thought. Maybe some sadness too. Sora bit his lip and moved his right hand again, moving it lightly on to Kairi's cheek. He gently gazed into her eyes and stroked her cheek with his thumb.

 

Kairi appreciated Sora's kindess and care. As close as she physically was to him, mentally she was farther away. She understood that she couldn't have dealt with Dark Kairi without him, she got that. But the fact she had caused him to get hurt got to her. It seemed like he was always getting hurt because of her. First it was with the shooting back at McDonald's, then the terrible argument they had gotten into back at his house before Christmas. And now this? Just how much pain could she cause him?

 

As Sora looked into Kairi's eyes, he realized that she was thinking very deeply, but she was still aware that he was there with her. That's all that really mattered, as long as she wasn't hurting. Fearing that speaking would only bring up pain and hurt, he stayed silent, rubbing her cheek with his thumb lightly. He wouldn't do something that could hurt Kairi anymore; he would never hurt her again. Ever.

 

Kairi blinked, her gaze still focused on Sora's eyes. She knew that if they stayed together, she could possibly cause more harm to come to him. That's what she was always doing, making him an open shot for pain. But she also knew that if she left him, which that thought alone caused her heart to break, she would only cause more damage and probably hurt him more than anyone ever could. That was the last thing she wanted to do. Kairi knew that if she left Sora, she would easily pass herself to the hands of heartbreak and hurt herself as well. She lost either way.

 

Sora shut his eyes halfway, sighing softly as he moved his right hand from its position on Kairi's cheek. He gingerly lift it up and set it a little further back on Kairi's head, lightly running over her red hair. He had no idea what she was thinking at the moment, but he understood if she wanted some privacy. If she ever wanted to talk, she knew that he was there for her. Always.

 

Kairi bit her lip and closed her eyes as tears began to well. She really hated thinking that way, but she couldn't blame it on Dark Kairi this time. It was opposite; it was all her. Kairi was thinking negatively on her own will, and she didn't know why. She just wanted the negative thoughts to leave her alone, that way she could get back to enjoying every minute she had with Sora. She loved him so much, and hurting him was the last thing she wanted.

 

Sora stopped running his hand over Kairi's hair and took his hand back, putting it on his side as he closed his eyes. He wasn't tired or anything...just kind of sad. It seemed like even now he couldn't protect Kairi from hurt or pain. He felt extremely helpless, a feeling he remembered from the battle. Before Dark Kairi had appeared in Kairi's place, he could only hold Kairi in his arms as she went through some kind of trauma. And then he had heard her scream his name, sounding like she was in agonizing pain. Sora bit down on his lip at the memory.

 

Kairi opened her eyes when his hand left her head, and she saw his expression. Ugh, she was doing it again! "I'm sorry," she whispered.

 

Sora stopped biting his lip as he fully opened his eyes, confused. "What for?" He asked softly, seeing no reason why she should be apologizing.

 

"I'm hurting you again, aren't I?" Kairi asked timidly, biting her lip when she finished.

 

"What? Of course not." Sora answered softly, surprised that she would even think such a thing.

 

"Really?" Kairi asked unsurely, quietly. She looked up at him with sad eyes.

 

Sora's eyes softened at her sadness. "Of course," He answered softly, his eyes gently gazing into hers. "Why would you even think such a thing?"

 

Kairi bit her lip in hesitation as she looked into his eyes. "Well," she started slowly. "It's just that...because of me...you're getting hurt all the time, Sora. First it was the robber back at work, and then that argument we had back at your house right before Christmas. Remember? You ran outside and could have gotten sick, and if I hadn't said anything, the argument would have never happened." Kairi's eyes flitted down, away from his as she continued. "And now...with what happened yesterday... You shouldn't have had to deal with her, Sora. You were hurt both physically and emotionally because of it, and it's all my fault." Kairi risked a glance up at Sora with saddened eyes.

 

"Kairi..." Sora started softly, saddened by the fact that she thought she was responsible for all those things. What happened at McDonalds really wasn't her fault. And the arguement at his house...he had kind of provoced by being grumpy and miserable. And as for Dark Kairi, well, he had thought through this a million times in his mind. It was his fault that they were both hurt so badly by her, not Kairi's. He was to blame. He stayed silent for a moment as he tried to think of a way to put all those thoughts into words.

 

Kairi bit her lip as she kept her eyes on him. She had a feeling they would well up in the tears that she had dismissed pretty soon. But she blinked, forcing that feeling away for the time being.

 

"That stuff isn't your fault," Sora said softly, looking into her violet-blue eyes. "A lot of it is my fault. I'm the one who provoked that fight, and it hurt you too. We never talked about it, but I know it did. And yesterday...I should have defeated Dark Kairi when I had a chance at the beginning of the battle, before any of that terrible stuff happened. If I had, maybe I could have changed it somehow..." he trailed off, biting down on his lip.

 

Kairi looked down at the pillow after he spoke. She understood that Sora was really upset back then, when they had the fight. But that didn't excuse her behavior. And with Dark Kairi... "Even if you had hit her then," Kairi started, flitting her eyes back up to his, "she still would have went after you. You were standing between what she wanted--me. And she was my...Darkness." Kairi had a hard time speaking that sentence. "I take responsibility for that..." Her violet-blue eyes gazed into his piercing blue while she had spoken.

 

Sora's eyes quivered slightly. "But Kairi...I didn't do a very good job, standing between you two. You still got hurt. I promised that I would do whatever it took to protect you, and I failed miserably. I let you down." Sora shut his eyes, ashamed at his own failure.
