KH2 explained in an Ansem report why Naminé was created iirc.

Anyways, it wasn't pointless. Having nearly half of the fricken organization destroyed is not pointless at all.

Not to mention, you're focusing way too much on Sora. It's all about Riku.

Without this game, we would be completely blind as to what actually happened to Riku after KH. We wouldn't know that he had the power to use both the light and the darkness. We wouldn't know anything about DiZ. We wouldn't know anything about Naminé. We wouldn't know what happened to Mickey.

Reverse/Rebirth gave great background information for Riku, so that we would know what he's been doing and how he and DiZ had met. Chain of Memories gave a great excuse for why Sora and Riku couldn't meet each other, even though Riku was saved from the darkness. It's a great setup for KH2.
