His friend is biologically female, but identifies as being a male (because they probably feel more comfortable as a male/don't feel they are a female as defined by society and themselves, etc.).

This friend is attracted to guys, so biologically they are heterosexual, but in terms of gender preference, they are homosexual because they are a self-identified male who likes other males.

on a side note I didn't realize this was a legitimate thing. I'd heard about it but thought people were more or less making excuses for their own dissatisfaction with who they are.

I understand perfectly.

I have two friends who would normally be classified as a lesbian couple because they're both biologically female. However, they both identify as male and use male pronouns. As I am sure that there are two men in an otherwise gay relationship who both identify as women and use female pronouns.

Your gender is completely different than your biological sex. And sometimes are in conflict.

It's a thing that happens. There's no excuses. They genuinely feel uncomfortable in their own bodies.

I myself identify as Gender Fluid or Genderqueer to use the catchall term. Meaning some days I feel female, other days I feel male, still other days I feel both, and still other days I feel as neither. It's not as confusing as one would think though.

 

I don't. I don't sit around hating the Backstreet Boys or Neil Diamond either, mostly because it's not my kind of music. Props to him for having success.
