John Vignocchi Discusses Including 'Kingdom Hearts' in 'Disney Infinity'

    In an interview with ComicBook.com, John Vignocchi (VP of Production for 'Disney Infinity) discusses the inclusion of 'Kingdom Hearts' in 'Disney Infinity' as revealed yesterday at D23. Key things mentioned include:
    • Plans for a KH inclusion started around 8 months ago
    • The Disney Infinity team is collaborating with Square-Enix
    • Vignocchi makes it clear that Disney is the sole owner of the Kingdom Hearts franchise (while Square-Enix is simply the developer of the games)
    As for what the future holds, Vignocchi states:

      So apparently all of the original KH characters and the FF characters are no longer owned by Nomura/Square Enix now? What's Vignocchi trying to pull here saying that Disney is the sole owner of the Kingdom Hearts series?

      And how the hell did that happen? If memory serves correctly, wasn't it someone from Square Enix, possibly Nomura, who came up with the idea of KH in the first place because they wanted to make the crossover? If anything, KH should be jointly owned by both Square and Disney with Square owning Sora, Aqua, and all the other original characters for obvious reasons.

      Yes it was Nomura's idea, but it's not a surprise given Disney's business practices. They would want to maintain ownership so that they have the final control and say over the series. If Square did something Disney didn't like, Disney could pull the plug. Disney as a company is very aware of how their characters are portrayed at all times and KH is no exception to that.

      This. Pertinent example: Dissidia Final Fantasy was originally intended to be a Kingdom Hearts game, iirc, and Disney shut that idea down because they didn't want their characters fighting each other (e.g. Mickey and Donald duking it out).
