with all of our modern conveniences and such we have a lot more free/leisure time in our modern society, which should mean that people should be happier. then how come the most treated 'illness' in the UK is depression? do people have too high expectations of life which are falling short of reality, is it something that has developed over time (plz no references to evolution, dont want any flaming) or is it something else entirely?

I'd say it's setting expectations too high, because when we do that, we're just setting ourselfs up for dissappointment, but I learned this lesson in real life experiences time and time again.

... Honestly, I think it's been dead in a ditch for a long while now.

I agree with VGN up there *^*, his point with the fact of too high expectations would explain much. Disappointment eventually leads to depression. *shrug*
