I have always wondered if people are able to live without saying vulgar things, such as swearing.
I know a few quiet people myself, and they never swear, but that's only in my class..

This is something I have always wondered.

Well if you don't know anything dirty or any swear words than you could never say them. Many people can live a life without uses of the term whether it's through choice or relegion, it's more of a choice and if you can restrain yourself from doing it.

It's possible, but just not probable.

Yes, millions do it every year.

Sure, they are actually people unable to speak, but but each to their own.

I don't believe any word to be a 'swear' word but that's just me. If someone is frustrated they say an exclamation word. That's more an accurate term for any 'cuss' word out there. They are used as exclamations to draw someone to pay attention. I consider someone saying 'drat' to be just on the same wave length as someone saying the F word in the same instance. Most 'cuss' words are simply that way because some people consider them profane but most are just about body functions any way, which are natural. I don't think there are 'bad' words but there are words to use at the right time and place.

Having said that, there are people who go through life making up other words to use in the place of naughty words that some people find offensive. Can they always do it? If they really set their mind to it, yes. I don't have to use words that people find offensive and are classed as curse words. I do use them though because I don't find them so serious and it's not like I am 'cursing' anyone so I find the term 'curse words' to be lame. But some people can master not using the words. After all, there aren't 'that' many of them and all languages have a ton of other words we can use instead as substitutes. A vast majority of people though have probably used a narty word at one point or another. If we count gestures as well, there isn't probably a person alive that hasn't expressed some kind of vulgarity or profanity out there unless the person is a vegetable and has been their entire life.

Hmmm. Good question. Personally, I really don't think someone can go their whole life without saying vulgar things or swearing. Unless its part of their religion. However, just because its part of their religion, it doesn't mean that it doesn't happen.

Maybe there are some people who have never 'cursed' before. However, I really don't think that there is someone like that. Everyone slips up.

Oh wait, it is possible! If you want someone to teach you to not curse, then I suggest using Jesus as your role model.......(He is the only one I can ever imagine not cursing)

But just because you have someone from a religion, it doesn't mean that it won't happen. People slip up. Just because its in a religion, it doesn't mean that its not going to happen. It might happen less frequently. And maybe some people will stop 'cursing' completely. But I don't think religion should automatically mean that you don't ever say vulgar things.

It's probably possible but not something you'd see very often. People mess up every day, I've never met someone who had never said a 'swear word' in my life.

I would agree with the reason people don't swear at all is because of their religion.

I agree with what Repliku said, I couldnt quote it all so I'll just elaborate what I think more. I don't think "curses" are bad either because theres a time and a place to use every word, and it just happens. Any word can be considered a "curse word" based on the context. Sometimes you might say something to someone and right after it you might want to put your foot in your mouth, that could be considered a "curse" because it was something that was bad to say at that point in time, even if you didnt use a "curse word." Some people don't like saying these "curse words" but in my view I don't think there so bad, theres just like everything else a time and a place to do things and use words and a time and a place not to. My view is sort of like a lawyer named Henry Drummond's from the book Inherit the Wind. He says "There are very few words in which the majority of humans on this planet know, so why not use whatever words we can to get our point across to the people." But back to the majoy point, no, I don't think its possible to go your whole life without using an inapropriate word because everyone slips, its human.

    I can't say it's impossible but I think it's so unlikely.
Also it depends on what you think is saying something bad. I personally have no probleming with *cussing*I bet even the most innocent little girl says gosh darnit when she spills her OJ all over the floor, and that phrase can easily be replaced by something else. So I wanna say no...but hey some people do it.

    *cough* <<

It is likely for people who do not like to cus or if they're religious, they don't cuss or anything.
But most people do slip up.

I guess I would have to ask though what is the difference between saying 'Oh crap' and 'Oh sh**'? Or 'Damnit' vs 'Darnit', or 'F*** you' or 'Screw you' etc? I'm not really catching why a number of words that we can count on both hands are considered vile and 'cuss words' when really I feel that any exclamation that even tries to imitate them at all is said with the same emphasis. They are just words to me.

The only time I see 'curse words' as an issue would be the old religious connotation of what it meant in the first place which was that you are wishing upon someone else a curse or calamity by some divine entity. Most people are not really doing this when they say some exclamations in anger, frustration or excitement. Most crass words are actually more affiliated with body activities as put downs or shouts because they are considered negative. However, it's not really saying that you want great harm to happen to the person by some deities' will. Somewhere along the line some people have really mixed things up because curse words in the majority aren't even -real- curse words.

It also depends on aspects of your religion if you can't swear.

    I don't swear.

I've gone through 18 years of my life and not once have my friends or family heard me utter "profanities."
I'm not religious either, so personally that hasn't payed a contribution as to why I do it. And it's not because I find it offensive, I honestly couldn't care less if the people around me are swearing up a storm. In fact one of my favorite bands consists mainly of just that. I don't do it because I'd rather not offend other people.

My friends think it is silly, and they'll try to get something out of me every once and a while. They try and they try but I don't, it's just not how I am. It's sort of hard to explain since I don't really know myself, I suppose I've just never felt the need to express myself in that way.

Well, it's certainly possible to live life without ever saying swear words.

Though without insulting others? That is a different story. I know plenty of quiet people who have said things that others have taken offense to. Just the very act of not talking or speaking quietly might piss someone off. You'd have to be really outgoing and really caring and loving for you never to insult someone in your life like this.

There's plenty of other possibilities too.
