Good and evil are a point of view. In some fiction the "evil" character may be pure evil and think of himself as evil, but most of the the time the "bad guy" believes what he is doing is good, or something that must happen, and the"hero" who gets in his way is the real "bad guy". It all depends on how you look at it.

Well you should have told me you were referring to something as superficial as deciding your car needs a new tire when the old is flat. Which is "right" in that case, materialistically.

    Sorry for misunderstanding you. =333

Destiny i'm glad you asked this question because i'm having the shittest time at the moment.I thank you for the question. In my opinion there is no such things as good or evil only a point of perspective. In your eye's someone *cough*cin*cough* might be evil but lets just say from O R A N G E's perspective this someone in good.No such thing as good or evil because it isn't sure.People could say hitler was evil but then the neo nazi's would spit back he was a visionary. We could say stalin was was the equvilent of a dictator but others will spit back he was a great leader of his country.Do you see? Impossible to have good or evil.

When the system is at its most corrupt. One must deviate the rules
to overthrow the greater evil. If doing the wrong thing can't be avoided,
it must be done. All for a greater good.

Evil doesn't exist. It's simply a matter of perspective and a difference in opinion.

Let me help you out... All humans have rights whether you like it or not.
When someone goes against these rights and hurts someone. Mentally,
physically or emotionally.... that is evil. Not all bad things are evil.
But the ones that are go against human rights are evil. Put yourself
    in the victims shoes.

These rights aren't necessary. In some twisted alternate world, rape is a perfectly sanctioned way of life. The rights we value only hold value in our current world, they are contingent on our subjective value of them.

Agreed. Evil is an opinion, sometimes intention also can make it differently thought of.

the problem is that people often have different views of good and evil. some people even twist the meanings to benefit. like the War in Iraq, i'm SURE a lot of people would consider it an evil deed but some people might consider it a good act.

As said before, evil is simply an opinion; a label that someone gives to someone of something else. The example of 'evil' people being 'merciful' is a good example. It is contradictory; something evil (devoid of emotion, mercy, happiness, caring, etc.) does something that BY DEFINITION is impossible. Take another example, the Heartless. They destroy world, eat hearts (basicly), and create mor dark beings. To the 'normal' or 'good' people, they are evil. But their actions are justified because that is their sole mean of survival; and thus needed and good (for them.) A being cannot be completely 100% accepted as evil, because no one thinks they are evil. They are "saviors" and "brave, noble" people.

evil? that would be me, accordign to popular belief lately.

but no seriously, I don't think pure evil or pure good exists on either side in the world. Everyone has greed, everyone makes choices to better themselves, or get something. theres just varying degrees of people willing to admit that. but yes, its true, nobody helps someone for the sake of helping them, theres always an underlying reason.

as for the person talking about Hitler being 'evil'

He did some terrible, horrible things, but look past it, at his leadership, he was a very intelligent man, made stupid choices, and killed thousands, yes, but don't demean the fact that he also raised a country from the ground and rebuilt it in both military aspects and financial. He did SOME good as well as all his BAD, he wasn't some horrible, stupid man that only murdered. Try reading your facts next time ^_^

Absolute good or evil do not exist, for obvious reasons. For one thing, what defines "good" and "evil" is completely and utterly subjective, they're nothing more then concepts, we merely establish them to keep order within society. And even then, what may be evil to one person or culture might be good in the eyes of another, and so and so forth.

So whether something can be completely and utterly evil and malevolent depends on the person's viewpoint towards the matter, but you can't really make the claim that anything is really good or evil from an objective standpoint.

ummmm....Sephiroth is my obvious choice, because after he found out about Jenova he hasn't done anything good. besides that, I don't think there is a definition of true evil. I think there are definite shades of gray.

i'd have to strongly disagree with styx. what is right and what is wrong dont necessarily have to do with good and evil. if you do something that is right your making a decision towards a situation or goal. good and evil lurk within every soul but it is your self- will and spirit that determines witch side you will givin to.

and no i dont believe that everyone is pure evil. because even the most diabolical person deserves some of the wonders, the side of light has to offer.

no one is perfect we all deserve mercy and a second chance.

This is all barring that good and evil actually exist as constructs. There are value judgements that we subjectively assign as being good and evil, but there is no standard, and the acts that we consider good are contingent on what we value in this world; as I've said, in a possible world rape is an honest way of life and killing is an acceptable norm.

Sure, but how would you tell them a part from someone who helps someone else simply for the sake of doing the right thing? If a person donates money to a charity out of the goodness of their own heart, and another person donates to charity simply so that he can further his own means (i.e. through notoriety, or feeling better about himself) how do you tell the difference at face value? You can't, so it's never safe to assume that people only do things for others if they are motivated by some personal means. You can make an inference from past dealings, but that will never carry you far enough.

Again, this is a just a value judgement of our current world. In a possible existence, being evil means that your happy, kind, and truthful and devoid of bad character traits. "Evil" is contingent on descriptions like the one you've given here, it's not the rule.

"Right" and "Wrong" are value judgements and just as contingent as "Good" and "Evil".

God and the Devil are another story. You first have show they necessarily exist. Other than that, their associations are simply value judgements. Satanist think it's the other way around. Who are you to say that they're wrong?

    .

you people just dont get it do you? what is right and what is wrong dont necessarily have to do with good and evil. good and evil exist where ever you go saying good and evil are not real is like saying that god and the devil are not real. even the most tainted and evil person has a little spark of light in there hearts and are still capable of forgiveness and mercy. no body is wants to be alone and no one deserves to be alone but thats when the decision of right and wrong comes into play when you want to reach out and help somebody. i may not have my share of rep whiterock but i do have my share wisdom.

It could be a number of people/creatures, judging on the circumstance, but in truth this is morally impossible, in my opinion.

It also depends on what you perceive as "100% evil".
