I'd love if you could describe how these are somehow unique to anime.

I'd love if you could describe how any trope is unique to any one genre. Obviously these things aren't unique to anime, but they're definitely more associated with it than other genres of animation. Mixing genres like you mentioned is a good example of this. It happens often outside of anime, but in animation it's definitely one of the things that makes anime different from cartoons. As I said before, it's more like how Dark Souls is clearly a Western RPG despite having been made in Japan.

Ok, mixing genres I'll accept, but what else?

Some people have argued that it's anime because it has a consistent story, where I'll point to Venture Bros and Archer, and ask "are these anime?"

Some people have argued that it's anime because of the art style, where I'll point to The Boondocks and Ping Pong, and ask "which one is anime?"

Some people have argued that it's anime because its eastern themes and designs and world, where I'll point to Samurai Jack and ask "is this anime?"

If you think any of these values belongs to a specific medium, I just can't agree.

Just because a work is, say, a tribute to, or homage to, or inspired by, something, does not make that work that thing.

Can't it be all of those things used together in certain ways that makes it anime?

I'm pretty sure anime is every single genre at any given time.

You should watch Ano Hana or Clannad. Truly a laugh riot. I was in tears.

Seen those years ago. I though Ano Hana was "ok" while I didn't really like Clannad at all until the second season.
It was the first time I ever saw an anime go on with life after high school.
Then it tried to be too sad and after that they hit the magical reset button which made me crack up at how ridiculous it got.

Also on a side note, just finished Eureka Seven.
It's end was dumb but it did make me chuckle.
