I would have to say no.
It's American-created and it only contains a really similar drawing style to anime.
Oh, I'm also talking about Avatar: The Last Airbender not the one with blue people that look similar to daft pu--*shot*

I feel like I got into a discussion about this at school once. Deja vu.

Anyway, it's not an anime. It has the similar art style and animations as Japanese anime, but that's about where the similarities end. It's a bit like that Totally Spies show, and that wasn't anime either, even though that took has some things in common with anime.

As they said in YGOTAS, it's not anime but it might as well be. It's similar to like Code Lyoko, which I believe was made in France.

Anime is made in Japan. Avatar was made in America. It's just that the style is done similarly to anime, so most people consider it to be.

No it isn't. While it does share a lot of similarities with anime such as drawing style. The only reason it isn't one is because it's American made and anime by defintion is animation that originates from Japan. This thread also gives me deja-vu since I've seen it in some many different places.

No. It simply shares similarities. America may seem to be making anime style cartoons but it's the French you want to watch with Galactic Football and Code Lyoko.

I would have to agree with all and say no as well. Like the show but I wouldn't consider it anime.

    I say no.
I mean, most people here already stated what an anime is, but personally, I use anime for any show that has a manga counterpart because that's what I originally thought they were. (I didn't call S-CRY-ed an anime until after the manga was made).

But yeah, what everyone else says is the truth.

No. Anime is a slang for Japanese animation, and Avatar was made in America, which is also the reason why it was pretty easy to attain a license for a movie.

There is an old phrase that fits in here, DTBD *dare to be different* and considering everyone is in agreement I am going with, yes Avatar is an Anime. I don't base whether or not an Anime is an Anime depending on where it's from. A gun made in America, is just as lethal as a gun made in Japan and you wouldn't call them any differently. Same with Anime, if it has the style of an Anime, and doesn't suck, then it is in my heart an Anime.

P.S. I don't like to be in agreement to a unanamous decision.

I looked through some definitions of anime. Some clearly state that anime is Japanese, while some just call it a style originated in Japan. So I don't really know what to think.

You do realize that, should anime be Japanese by definition, then your "daring to be different" phrase would not fit here at all...don't you?

Have to agree with what everybody has mostly said above, it was made in America so it can't really be a anime...

    Actually it's Canadian :]
    Yes and no.
For the style yes and for all the Asian references, but it is a lot like other Western cartoons so I'm not really too sure.
It's TONS better than most cartoons that attempt to have storylines, I'll say.

It's not an anime. It was animated in Korea. That fact comes straight from the creators of the show.

I call it a mock-anime. The style is similar to anime, but not exactly the same.

IIRC, anime is just Japanese for animation, isn't it?
In the words of LittleKuriboh, it's not an anime but might as well be. The things I enjoy about Avatar are the things I enjoy about other anime, and alot more.

Anime or not, it's an amazing show.

Eh, I'd still say it's an anime even if it's made in the west. The art style, the more serious than most story lines, the humour, it's an anime. It's certainly not a cartoon.

Things like these should be judged on what they are, not where they were made.

If we're defining anime as a style, then yes, it is an anime. If we are defining anime as "Animation from Japan", then it is not.
