Birth by Sleep Is Anyone Else Disappointed That The Game Will Most Likely Use a Card System?

I didn't hate Chain of Memories, but I would have preferred a real portable Kingdom Hearts-style game. Similarly, when I first heard about this game and saw the screens, I was excited to think I would be playing a real Kingdom Hearts-style game on-the-go. When I read the Wikipedia article and read that it would most likely be a card-based system similar to Chain of Memories, I was deeply disappointed. The Card system was fun, but it hindered the ability to have that good 'ol button mashing Kingdom Hearts feel. While Birth By Sleep is definitely going in the right direction for me (with the command menu and all), I still hope they just go with flat out regular Kingdom Hearts gameplay.

    Thoughts?

WTF?! Card battle game? No way! The leaked trailer show's that the battle system is a regular Kingdom Hearts style one. Like Crisis Core only with out the slot thing.

I meant like Chain of Memories' system, not like a Yu-Gi-Oh! game. And look on Wikipedia. It says that it will use a similar system to Chain of Memories.

Yes, I am a little disappointed. However, I did like the card system in CoM. It was quite strategic, and deep. Maybe it's for the best that BbS is like this; after all, the same button-mashing system has been used in both KHI and II. It could get very boring if SE don't make an effort to liven things up a little.

Don't believe everything you read on Wikipedia. It can be edited by virtually anyone, so it is not always right. As for this ard system, we would've heard about it on this site if it were true.

    *facepalm*
Did you see any cards in the gameplay trailer or pics(maybe you were talking about the battle system cuz it sounds like you think it involves cards)? It uses a command deck...I actually like this style better than KH and KH2. Magic can only be used once before recharging...and from what I've heard...well I think it will be awesome!

That's true to an extent. Square has released 6 Kingdom Hearts games to date (excluding the V-Cast game), 4 of which were the same button-mashing formula. Not only were these games extremely successful at first (as we all know), but there are people who still play them to this day, meaning that the game's combat system must have some replay value to it. I see what you're saying, and you have a point, however I would like that same addicting button mashing madness that came with the mains Kingdom Hearts games (though it would help if they made magic somewhat useful again).

If there actually is a card system, I wonder how Nomura will work it into the storyline. In CoM, being in Castle Oblivion meant that cards governed all your actions in battle. He'll have to create some sort of backstory/ explanation for why cards must be used.

And don't get me wrong, the gameplay of KH I and II is classic. It's still fun after all these years. I just think it might be a bit unoriginal if this system isn't updated as new games are made.

As ArchAwesomeman said, it's not cards, it's commands. If you look closely at the leaked trailer, you'll see it is indeed commands, and not cards.

Ok, I'll go off topic once. Wikipedia is very valid. Article edits are brought to the attention of the administrators of the site and they check for sited sources and to make sure that the information added isn't completely stupid, offensive, or just not related to the article. That same card system information has been there for a few months now. I'm sure if it was inaccurate, it would be removed by now.

I realize that there's a command menu and to be honest, I'm not sure entirely how the cards are implemented into gameplay. However, I really think that just keeping the traditional Kingdom Hearts formula (with a few changes here and there) would be best for the fans, not another experiment like Chain of Memories, which was fine in my opinion, but how many of you really like Chain of Memories more than KH1 or KH2?

Here's non-Wikipedia proof. How about IGN?

The entire article is here if you want to look at it yourself.

It's not using cards. Command deck ftw. I just wonder how it'll work...Zeftnon(however you spell it) the Superior had a REALLY good theory on the battle system/controls.

Wait, which one is going to be a Card system? o.o

I know BBS isn't, and I'm fairly positive 382/6 (Or whatever it is exactly. I don't really care to remember. x_x) isn't as well. Coded might.. but.. I thought that was a regular KH game too. o:

BBS is going to use cards, but not really cards, something like it but different. they were going for cards but changed their mind because it was too similar to RE:COM

In any case, we know it's going to be a really fun game... SE hasn't let us down yet (excluding FFXII of course, aka the biggest disaster since...I don't know when). It's the storyline I'm really interested in.

Ok, sorry if I go into a rant.

FFXII is seriously the most disappointing game I've ever played. It starts out interestingly enough, but the characters are so uninteresting and badly developed. Admittedly, Ashe is pretty intriguing, and Balthier and Basch look cool, but that's it. So basically the story is just a really bland "tale of political intrigue" which utterly fails to create and tension or atmosphere. And then the translator (forget his name) probably felt he couldn't just leave the story as it was, so all the characters speak with anachronistic language and words that haven't actually been used for at least a century. So basically the characters speak like actors in an 18th century play or something, yet underneath it all they're not really saying anything of interest, just yapping on and on about magic stones and swords and all this other stuff it's hard to give a damn about.

I actually like the new battle system and the graphics, but there is so much level grinding to do that you don't get a chance to enjoy it. And money is so unbelievably scarce that you can hardly ever upgrade your equipment. You have to fight for an hour or so to buy a single spell.

And the music is the worst bit of all. There are no recognisable character themes, and the only pieces I heard in the game that actually moved me (Main theme of FFIV, the Prelude and Kiss me Goodbye) were composed by Nobuo Uematsu, not the new guy.

    Phew. Sorry about that.

I hated the idea of Re: CoM, but I didn't like it much when I did play it
But now I REALLY like it
So if the battle system is like Re: CoM, I'll get it, definetely
