It’s been a long time coming, but I’m proud to officially unveil KH-Vids 9.0.

Those who have been with us for several years know that it has been somewhat of a tradition to redesign KH-Vids every year, and while there have been lapses, I’ve always enjoyed revisiting and updating the site’s appearance so regularly. For the ninth (numbered) iteration of our site, however, I decided to tackle a rather ambitious goal: creating a style framework.

What does that mean, exactly? Well, to put it in layman’s terms, every year I build a new style for KH-Vids completely from scratch. This involves a lot of work, and much of it is simply adding support for the many custom pages, features, and systems we have on KH-Vids. Redoing all of that every year gets tiresome and delays the process. Think of the KH-Vids Framework as a sort of custom base style that I can develop off of, rather than having to repeat all that work!

That’s great and all, but what does that mean for you – the end user? Well, with that base, it will be a lot easier to update styles, add new features that we invent or you guys request, and best of all, offer multiple different styles to our users. You’ll notice that we’re launching KH-Vids 9.0 with both Light and Dark variants! Basically…
    • Creating new styles is faster and easier
    • Increased consistency between styles
    • Styles will no longer be deprecated/deactivated once replaced
    • Styles can be updated easily & all at once (when a bug is fixed on one style, it's fixed on all of them)
There are a ton of new features and updates hidden within this update, and it’d take ages for me to detail them all in this post. I’m going to be trying something new now, not just for stylistic updates but for any new features we’d like to detail on this site – Have You Seen? posts! Within the Feedback & Assistance section, I’ll be creating individual threads that highlight some of these changes and help users acclimate themselves with them.

Similarly, because of the expanse of the KH-Vids Framework and KH-Vids 9.0 (this update also brings us to the latest version of XenForo, 1.4.7), we’ll be taking bug reports a little differently now. If you notice something that doesn’t look (or work) quite right, you can now post in our special bug report section and I’ll take care of it, rather than flooding this thread and creating a jumbled mess.

I’d also like to extend a thank you to the entire staff team for their feedback throughout the creation process, but especially to @libregkd , who helped me in creating the framework with his code expertise.

We hope you guys enjoy the new look!

It uses XenForo's built-in templating system, so I don't think you would be able to play with it in Dreamweaver unfortunately.
Well feel free to file bug reports if things are cutting off or what have you! Any new style is going to take time to iron out little errors and just for people to generally adjust. As for the colors, I pretty heavily associate blue and gold with the Kingdom Hearts series, and that's why it's sort of the site's scheme. The colors are definitely more saturated than ever before but it was a conscious choice. :)

Well, I could copy all the code using "Inspect Element', but that's only the HTML code, so I wouldn't get very far. Too bad, I wanted to mess around with it. How come you guys never do it the fun way using Dreamweaver?

Oh, and what's with the Tumblr, Reddit, and Email tabs at the top of some pages?

They're like the 'Share' feature on Facebook; you can click it and post a link there back to these articles on KHV.

I haven't used Dreamweaver much but it would be difficult, for starters, to set it up to work with forum softwares like XenForo (I've never seen or heard of anyone doing so but I also don't really look). The built-in tools are plenty robust for me, and I don't like WYSIWYG editors for HTML/CSS anyway. I prefer to just write the code myself.

That's why I say Dreamweaver, because you can write the code yourself. I made my whole website for my Web Design class on Dreamweaver. It's pretty simple, but all of it was made from scratch, except for the slideshow and lightbox I put on it.

Not sure why it would be difficult though. I mean, I don't know much about it, but if you can import HTML code and CSS, you should be able to make it work. Still, it's a personal thing. I've just used Dreamweaver and a little of Muse, so I prefer them

I actually find those particular interfaces a bit annoying to use for my taste, buuuut I'm also old school and prefer do all my plain HTML/CSS stuff in notepad++/my IDEs of choice (usually Eclipse) if needed and haven't seen the need to use anything else.

Dreamweaver is basically useless when it comes to forums. It's alright if you're wanting to run tests on your code and make sure that all your syntax is correct but on a forum software like XenForo it's worthless. The templating system XenForo uses cuts out a need for any outside software. I've written I don't know how much code in XenForo with XenForo. Plus, all of your code doesn't have to be lumped together. You can link to everything. You don't have to call information from the database, you can just use the conditional system. Dreamweaver is more for standalone websites. Sites you might see a business using. Big businesses will pay big money for developers to create their website and, honestly, I doubt they use Dreamweaver to make them. I prefer Sublime Text 2 myself.

EDIT: Programs like Dreamweaver can be useful when you're creating an add-on as you'd need to save the javascript/php files to send to the server. But as long as it's not needing any extreme coding, it can be done in XenForo.

The new styles make liberal use of custom Style Properties as well, which is a core system in XenForo and would be impossible to my knowledge to configure in Dreamweaver. @Nights☆ summed it up pretty well: if you're building a website from scratch, Dreamweaver can be a great tool. If you're using a system like XenForo or vBulletin or WordPress, the built-in tools are probably sufficient for templating and designing. True you can paste HTML and CSS into Dreamweaver, but XenForo's HTML and CSS code is spread across dozens of templates.

Sounds like Muse, in a sense. Something simple is spread across a ton of templates. I don't have Adobe right now either way, but it would have been fun messing with the site for the heck of it.

I don't want to sound overly negative, but when you say "multiple styles for different users" could one of those be the style from KH-Vids 8, please? I liked that look a lot better.

Right now the priority is to perfect the current styles, and I highly recommend giving some time to adjust to them. I do hope to offer other style selections in the future, but it's a long way off -- creating styles still will take & effort. No plans have been made at this point.

Well that makes sense, I guess. And after a quick look around it's not really as bad as my first impressions made it seem. Still I think a few improvements could be made.
