Here's a video I found last night or this morning. (I can't really remember. I was watching YouTube videos, mostly relating to police stuff, until 4:00 AM.) This is an episode of Cops someone recorded with a camcorder. Ignoring a lot of the trolling and insulting comments for the video, what do you guys think? I agree with a lot of the ones that said better now than later. Sending him to juvenile detention for one night would be better than sending him to jail later for a longer period of time. I'm not sure myself if I would consider juvenile detention to be like jail or prison, though. The only thing that confuses me is the handcuffing of the boy, because not only did I think that people that young (he is / was 11) couldn't be handcuffed, but he wasn't putting any up any sort of resistance or anything, so why handcuff him? Also, the video was uploaded on April 22, 2011, but I'm not sure about the episode, so an age placement for that kid is kind of difficult. Thoughts?
Huh? I'm not good at listening English... but did I hear THAT BOY smoke and break windows? O_O Well, breaking windows is something that can happen with a stupid kid, but smoke is way far from being good, it's one of the worst things for a child. Sending him for a night in juvenile detention is the best they could do, or just yell at the boy and make him learn the lesson. But... handcuff a kid that is 11? That is unacceptable, he is just a kid, don't have much sense of what's wrong is what's right. That thing can hurt him and the far I saw he wouldn't resist or anything. USA is the only place that they arrest children right? Don't mattering the age, I think. But for me the boy would never do something like that again.
Kids actually supposedly develop a sense of wrong and right around age 7, iirc. He'd probably know it was wrong by then, and the fact that he was lying about it and crying is only evidence of that. Also, I don't know for certain but I believe handcuffs are just standard procedure when someone is being arrested -- correct me if I'm wrong? Anyway, if he's going around stealing things and breaking windows, a day in detention is a harsh but probably necessary lesson for him, imo -- at least if he's been caught for it several times (I think that's what was implied in the video? I don't think it'd be fair to do that after just one offense, though). Also, I felt the officer was fairly patient with him -- asked him several times about what he was doing, and he just continued to lie. Hopefully, he learned from the experience.
Hum, I should correct myself about the age. You're right, you should know about right and wrong things, but I, for example, when was a child I cried for anything, even if I wasn't wrong but someone keep accusing me, I would cry if I was 11. And at least where I live, in Brazil, yes, to arrest someone. But still... he is just a child... but this reminds me that USA arrest minors, right?
Ignore the title of the video, by the way. It's not funny! Anyway, I agree with both of you. However, regarding the crying, I have to agree with Excasr. While it's certainly possible, I believe he was just crying out of fear in this case or just because of the situation.
I think that a child's self esteem is crazy. He has to prove he's cool by breaking windows, stealing, and smoking. Me? I crack jokes. But this is just...ridiculous.
ok, the kid's throwing rocks at a windows, smoking....and he's got a mohawk? Hairstyle rebelling aside, what the heck is with that kid breaking a window? Why would he break a window? If he knows it's wrong, why was he doing it? And he's stealing lighters, what's up with that? Crying and all might be somewhat sad for most people, but I really can't say I feel all that bad. I mean, the kid's 11-years old and he's stealing lighters, smoking.....I don't know how my reaction should be. First should being that it's a good thing he went a night to juvenile because then he'll know how bad it can be. If it were me, I would have just went with what the guy said. Although I hope I never end up in a situation like that. And I think handcuffing is supposed to be done for every person, I'm not sure why. But no matter what the offense it, I think they do it just so you either don't do anything that might harm yourself any more or the police. Just a guess though.
To add another discussion, do you guys think he's one of those kids that actually learned their lesson? I think he did. He seems like a pretty nice kid, to be honest; by the looks the video, it sounds like it could have been influence. For example, one of my friends last year passed in a no passing zone on a highway because his friend ahead of him was turning into a driveway and was going slow. He eventually got his license taken away until near the end of last school year (2010 - 2011). However, before he got it taken away and after getting it back, he hasn't done anything like that. Also, how old do you guys think he is now? Like I said, an age placement is pretty difficult. The upload date tells us nothing. If I recall correctly, all incident segments on Cops show a date and time at the beginning, but it doesn't look like the user that uploaded the video got it. The beginning is usually the cop giving a brief summary or something about their life as a cop and then where they are heading to because of a call they got.
I think he knew, as Stardust said, that all of that was wrong. So he was really in a bad situation, so I think that he did learn his lesson. It would be really stupid to anyone to keep doing this after a conversation with a cop. He did look a nice kid for me too, I wouldn't say he could do such a thing before watching the video. And yes, I agree, the video isn't funny. He probably was influenced by someone else. Hm, I don't think someone would be with that video so much time, probably was uploaded just after it passed on TV. So I believe the boy wasa eleven in April 2011, though I'm not sure. Yes, the user of the upload didn't get the introduction about the case, usually, it should be at the beginning.
Kids hardly ever learn their lesson. From my experience in middle school, they could care less about being suspended 5 times. Their self esteem still overcomes.
