A mental disorder is just another obstacle in life, which many people have, and most can overcome. As has been said, only the severe cases that endanger that person or others call for drastic measures to be taken, like separating them from society.

It's often the case that when someone greatly struggles in one aspect of life, they greatly excel in another. I have a belief that every human is, more or less, equally capable at birth. This equality is then lost as a result of the amount of effort that one puts into bettering themselves. Our strengths and weaknesses vary, and unfortunately the weaknesses of some are more of a hindrance on everyday life than those of others, but our faults are generally compensated for. Someone with a mental disorder might not be a well-rounded person, but most will find that they have a gift of sorts.

Just because someone doesn't fit the mold of a normal human does not mean that they are inferior. Rather, if they play to their strengths, they can effectively minimize the impact of their imperfections, and possibly do/create/etc. something better than anyone before them.

Depending on their situation, it varies. But minor or major, they all need help.

((Matters how bad it is... Like I mean I have a minor depression disorder. Plus many people have that. But they normally are fair, on the over hand some of them kill themselves. Pills can help though for that disorder, it matters to how dire the disorder is and what sort it is to say if what is needed to help them... But I don't really need help so I believe Not Everyone with a disorder needs it either so yeah... Idk I must say I doubt my words can change anything though so my thoughts are just a blah =/ ))

Excluding one who has a mental disorder or illness when he/she is trying to help him/herself is considered discrimnation in my book. Just because someone can't help who they are doesn't mean he or she should be treated like a leper. I can understand if the individual refused it treatement then people would be weary for their own safety, but there are thousands of people who live normal lifes and are being treated for their conditions so they should not be judged accordindly by that.

I have a mental disorder/illness - ADD/Asperger's Syndrome. When combined, this means I have basically no social skills, and trouble focusing on unpleasant tasks. My brother has high-functioning autism, as well.

As has been mentioned in the previous posts, it all depends on how bad it is. For instance, despite my condition, the only concessions I am getting at college is a dorm room to myself. Everything else is perfectly normal. My brother, on the other hand, will need a bit more help, and it is unlikely he will ever move too far away from home, as he still gets help from us. However, he starts high school in the fall, just as a kid his age is supposed to.

It all depends on severity and availability of treatment. For instance, we were willing to put up thousands of dollars, and make my brother's severe autism become a much milder form. We're still paying off those debts, but it was worth it.

ive had some good friends who have mental disorders over the years, and i think that yes, they deserve to be helped and treated differently, but not spoiled. this was their point of view, as well, which i found out when i discussed the topic with them :)

I'd rather think that the people who say that being insane would be a cool thing because it's 'exciting' would be the ones with a disorder.

They should be monitored, not locked up. They are still human, like us. Just different.
