I've seen worst claims people have made to become President. Like claiming to be religious.

How exactly is that homophobic? Keyblade Spirit is not being homophobic nor is he homophobic.

Even if you're completely for equal rights, you shouldn't fall for someone pretending to be homosexual simply for sympathy votes. It's the same thing as a person pretending to be someone they're not so another person will like him, although that's not as major of this.

Yeah, it's almost as bad as someone pretending to be black just to become president.

All that makeup has left the US in quite the financial pickle.

I'm not saying KS himself is homophobic, but the statement is a little bit. Even though LGBTA people are more accepted than ever, the US is still a country in which gay people cannot marry in the majority of the states. There is very little to be won by claiming you are gay, since most liberal people (and it's much more likely that the hypothetical candidate KS is talking about is a Democrat) who are accepting of homosexuality were already voting for that person, and conservatives would just try to shut that person down even more. Furthermore the person claiming to be gay would be opening themselves up for a lot of hate, death and rape threats, and to an increased chance of violence due to their (claimed) sexuality.

I don't know why so many people think that being, or claiming to be gay is somehow a fun, beneficial thing to be. Being able to be out and true to yourself in a safe environment can be very liberating, but the amount of bigoted people trying to hurt you, emotionally and physically is awful and I don't see why anyone would want to subject themselves to that voluntarily by claiming to be gay.

Considering some people hate homosexual people so much, why would they get involved in a homosexual act by raping them? Seems contradictory.

Putting under spoiler tags just in case it's triggering to someone
Rape is not about sexual gratification, it's about power, control and stripping the victim of their humanity. It's extremely common for women especially to be threatened with it while in the same breath they're called fat, ugly, unf*ckable, gross, etc. I can't even count the times I've had someone say "disgusting misandrist cow, I ought to rape you so you know your place," to me when I've spoken my mind, both in real life and online.

    Makes sense.

Even if it's not for gratification, though, I guess I still find it a bit ironic that a male, for example, that hates homosexuals would rape another male to "prove" something. Rape is still sex, it's just not consensual.

By the way, you forgot your closing spoiler tag in your message.

If someone i faking being gay to get votes they're too early, there's not enough acceptance for that to gain you anything up here in Canada where marriage is at least legal, never mind the states.

Huh, it looked like it was still under the tag without the closing one, but fixed anyways.
I'm gonna have to disagree with you there, rape is not sex. Sex is an intimate act involving two consenting people, anything lacking in consent is rape. And I'm not saying that all homophobes want to rape another man. But there's definitely an attitude of being able to "turn" a gay woman straight, "since she just hasn't been with the right guy yet". Another phrase that's been hurled at me (and I'm not even gay, I identify as pansexual).

And there was the horrible molestation scandal with the Catholic Church, which condemns homosexuality but still had thousands of priest molesting children, mainly boys.

    Hm
I suppose one could look at sex in a romantic way, but on a purely technical aspect, sex is just sex. I mean rape is often at least partially described as non-consensual sex. I could see why someone would like to keep the two notions separate though.

Even if the candidate WAS gay, voting for someone for being gay is ridiculously stupid. Vote for someone because you agree with their policies. Sexuality is not important in determining the ability to lead a country. Or, you know, at all.

    Well this thread got deep.

Is being "the first *insert characteristic here*" the cool thing if you want to be President? I guess there name goes down in History. Plus, if he's not gay, it would be very difficult to keep up the guise for long, what if he wanted to get married to a woman, then people's trust in him would fall incredibly quickly.

Careful with your wording. Sympathy wasn't the best choice in this case, it implies pity, that it's a negative state, and that people will vote out of a feeling of sympathy.
If anything, people would vote for someone out of misplaced political correctness
