I think the flames embody everything that is wrong with the films and their representation of Optimus and that franchise as a whole, though. If not for the abundance of things I don't like about the films, flames on Optimus could maybe be kinda cool on a design that wasn't so atrocious.

The only place I can kinda get behind him is the '84 series where he's far more expressive and less dull like in Prime and the movies. Everything else just does not work for me at all. And that's kinda my point. Would people think he's so good if he were not the original and had he not been brought back for the films? Maybe, but I'm not so sure. I should also add that Gary Chalk would absolutely not work for the films. It's clear that the Optimus from the films was written with Cullen in mind, and given that so many people familiar with Transformers outside of the films take issue with their representation of Optimus, I don't see how more people aren't realizing this correlation and questioning their love for his performances.

and lets be real here. peter belongs on toonami and nowhere else
i don't dislike the guys voice i just don't prefer it on optimus

Eh, I actually like Optimus' design, about one of the only designs in the films that I like. The flames I can see why you're not a fan of, but they're not that bad to me (actually blending in with other cars has never exactly been a strong suit of the Transformers series.)

Gary Chalk was the first time I remember hearing Optimus' voice, so, at least for me, Peter Cullen being the original voice actor has zero input on my opinion. And what do you mean saying that the films are written for Cullen and not Chalk? Not that I disagree yet, I'm just not sure what you mean.

I'll be real and say that Peter Cullen makes a perfectly good Optimus Prime.

I like his look in Age. really diggin the knight aesthetic and overall tighter design

I refuse to believe that as soon as a live-action Transformers movie was pitched, that the people making it didn't immediately think "let's bring the original guy back." I think Cullen's deep, powerful voice is reflected in how the Optimus from the films acts. From his mannerisms, to his commanding presence, to how he mutilates his victims, I think it was all written with the idea of bringing this darker Optimus to screen for the people who grew up with the lighter Optimus as kids in the 80s, which also means bringing Cullen back. Of course you're going to market a Transformers franchise to kids, but you can't tell me that the films don't reek of subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) adult appeal, and Optimus is a... prime... example of this.
I could be projecting. I probably am projecting. That's just how I see it.

    well.

So I'm gonna do the first three movies as a semi-marathon too. Currently halfway through the first film. Man this film actually has a few genuinely good scenes...too bad there's so much low brow dialogue and so many plot holes.

I'm going to see the fourth film in iMax this week. Gonna be cool if Marky Mark doesn't ruin giant robots punching other giant robots for me.

So I saw the new Transformers on Sunday. In all honesty it is the best movie of the series yet. I mean that too, no joke. The fact it is getting worse scores then any of the last three movies baffles me. That's not to say it is good, but it is better.
You don't have to worry about that.

Good because that's literally all I want from a giant robot movie: Giant robots punching each other.

    There is plenty of that.

Though now I am curious what you meant by ruin in your last post. What could Mark Walberg ruin that Shia LaBeouf didn't?

Saw Transformers: Age of Extinction. I mean, I liked it. Do I care about the human characters yet? No. Do I think every event made perfect sense? PFFF NO. Absolutely not. Did I even enjoy the narrative? Ah, not really. But there was a part where a robot samurai chopped up two other robots on top of a monorail when another robot came in riding a fire breathing t-rex while two robots were battling on top of a pterodactyl. Needless to say, I had fun.

WASN'T ENOUGH. Marky Mark was enjoyable though. Shia was okay in the first movie, the tihrd movie, and even the opening of the second. Crappy person, but he was lively enough on screen to keep me awake.

I actually really like the first Bayformer movie, I know its not a great movie but I find it a fun movie to watch. The rest I can admit are...not that great.

Oh yeah and they all have fantastic scores, I love Jablonsky.

I saw Age on Thursday. I enjoyed it a lot more than the other movies.

To be honest I think I just had low expectations for the whole thing, and yet I had big expectations for the Dinobots.

But I mean seriously Prime riding Grimlock is my favorite thing.

Is it decent to watch? I stopped after the second one because i felt there were too many unnecessarily dirty jokes (i mean there was some in the first but...robot balls..rly?) and half the time i felt like i was watching two soda cans being thrown together. i really want to see age of extinction mainly for dinobots.

I think the extent of dirty jokes is how sexualized Mark Wahlberg's character's daughter is in it, which is admittedly not a lot.

All the daddy issues aside though, the battles are fantastic and make it worth to watch.

Went and made a pros & cons list of the things I could remember from Age.

    Pros:
The Dinobots are in this movie (blue balled for three movies...)
A surprisingly dark story that takes itself seriously
Mark Walberg as the main character instead of Shia LaBeouf
Mark Walberg's character instead of Sam Witwicky
Mark Walberg's character actually gets shit done
    Actual good humor this time
The best comic relief character in the entire series
Better writing this time around (well, by comparison)
Robots riding Dinosaurs (hard to be mad at a film when you find yourself saying that)
More screen time for the Transformers
Able to recognize who's who in a fight
    Optimus actually getting character development
    Decent Action
The stupid stuff from the last movies either being down played significantly or removed entirely
Obligatory dumb small robot appears in the movie for ten minutes just to give exposition and then peace's out and is never seen or heard again
An intimidating human villain who feels like he came out of a Die Hard movie
Lockdown is an intimidating Transformers villain
None of the Autobots are killed off (at least the ones we're suppose to give a shit about)
    Frank Walker as Galvatron
    The Dinobots don't talk. :D

    Cons:
The Dinobots are in this movie but only for the last Act of the film
Some of the dumb **** that pissed people off is still here (but down played heavily)
    165 minute runtime
Main character's daughter's boyfriend is an annoying, useless ******bag who has no meaningful impact on the story.
"My face is my warrant." (Though to be honest the guy who said it is pretty intimidating and if he said that to you you'd probably wouldn't argue him)
The best comic relief character in the entire series gets killed off in the first half of the movie. Horrifically.
Still not knowing who any of the Autobots' names are besides Optimus and Bumblebee
Obligatory dumb small robot appears in the movie for ten minutes just to give exposition
Cheesy writing at times (though that may be a Pro depending on who you are)
Galvatron sadly had little purpose in this movie and just peace's out at the end
Action drags on too long at times
    The Dinobots don't talk :C

Was gonna say, "YOU MEAN GRIMLOCK DOESN'T MAKE SENTENCES USING HIS OWN NAME!?" But yeah, at least they're not racist caricatures.

    Pretty much.

Before the movie started me and my nephew were making jokes on what it would be like if Grimlock had a racist caricature voice.

Since there isn't an actual thread in the Film section:

+Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) is actually likable, gets shit done, and has a character arc that I cared about. I don't miss Sam Witwicky at all.
+The first decent human villain in the film series
    +Yet again, stunning CGI work
+No juvenile sex jokes (the jellyfish thing was close though)
+Obvious jokes about the film series' own flaws
+Liked the variety of the Autobots (Drift (Ken Watanabe), a robot samurai, who turns into a Bugatti AND a helicopter....yo)
+Motherfucking Dinobots (THEY'RE HUGE AND DESTROY ALL)
+Joshua Joyce (Stanley Tucci) is really fun to watch, and I liked his character
+Su Yueming (Bingbing Li) is also a cool character
+Many of the best action scenes in the film series
+Lockdown's ship was a neat location to see
+BENDER'S VOICE ACTOR (John DiMaggio) IS AN AUTOBOT
+Steve Jablonsky's score is fantastic yet again
+Seeing Optimus Prime's G1 vehicle mode get some love
+Mark Ryan gets love as Lockdown (since Bumblebee NEVER GETS TO FREAKING TALK FOR WHATEVER STUPID REASON)
+Some actual tension felt when a likable good guy is killed gruesomely
-But that tension is lost when no other good guy gets the same treatment
-Plot gets SUPER unfocused around halfway into the film's run time
-Galvatron felt shoehorned in, and I'm not sure I like how they changed his creation (shoulda just gone with Nemesis Prime)
-Missed out on the opportunity to kill off Skids and Mudflap on-screen (though apparently they were killed off in Dark of the Moon's comic)
    -Dinobots were a little underused
-GRIMLOCK DOESN'T TALK (nor do the other Dinobots BUT GRIMLOCK C'MON)
-Could totally tell when some scenes were green-screened (usually when human characters are put on spaceships)
-Felt like Su Yueming like she could have used more scenes
-No Agent Simmons (John Turturro) :<
-Soundtrack got kind of annoying in the film
-NO LINKIN PARK WHEN THEY JUST PUT OUT ONE OF THEIR BEST ALBUMS????
?So many shots of American countryside
?Optimus Prime can just fly now?
?No mention of Sam Witwicky at all

All in all, the best of the series so far (though the first film is a lot more coherent.)
