Amidst all the exciting Dream Drop Distance news, we get this gem from IGN:
You can read the full article by clicking here.

IGN brings up some valid points in their article, citing how the story has become over complicated, the Disney worlds can get dull, and being scattered all over the console & handheld market has not helped the series at all. Still, I think they're a bit critical, personally--the Disney worlds are also a nice throwback to many of our childhoods, and the story can make sense if you pay attention. But what do you guys think? Has the Kingdom Hearts series been waning over the years, or is it continuing as strong as ever?

    Let us know your thoughts!

Thanks to forum member exile0025 for bringing up the article.

Uh, that's not Square's problem. The first party studios should be focusing on that, let Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft make the system sellers. There are reasons for companies to make games system-specific, but not because they want to make the systems stand out. Not that releasing a KH game on every system would do that, that would just tip up all the different systems. There are reasons to make system-specific, but not really to make one on every system. That's just Square being Square.

How is that about the names not a legitimate complaint? I still can't remember at all what the full title of Days is. It seems like a perfectly fair thing to point out.

So what you're saying is... that Japanese stuff in general is worse at story telling and character building? I've always hated the "that's what they do over there, so it's alright!" defense. It's not a good defense, if something sucks, then it sucks no matter where it's from. Not that I am saying I dislike Japanese story telling (I don't), but that is such a poor way of defending something.

Sort of?! More like badly! The story makes perfect sense! This guy probably has low intelligence and can't comprehend The Adjustment Bureau(remember when that movie was deemed "confusing"?). The story does get muddled when a new one comes out, but makes up for it with the fantastic WTF? moments. This guy is a troll. "Twilight for boys"?! Where is there a love triangle in the series?! (Isn't that all Twilight is about?) That was shattered when Riku said, "Take care of her." This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Great, now I'm in a bad mood. >:(

I disagree with the claim of platform jumping. Why shouldn't we? I mean, I can relate to the arguments about money, but that stops on the claim that that would be the only game one buys on the console. GBA? There were BILLIONS of good games for that system. DS? Once again, BILLIONS of good games. PSP? If you don't like Star Wars and stuff like that, then this is not the platform for you. 3DS? I don't know about you, but I plan to buy this system for Super Mario 3D Land and other games. As for KHIII, I would kind of like the loyalty to Sony. I really don't think it will settle well on the Xbox.

To me, Kingdom Hearts is settling rivalries and bringing all the systems together. That is a good thing in itself.

Unconfirmed and unlikely imo, and even if it is real, no real to assume it'd be on the Vita. A lot of people seem to think it was merely referring to Birth by Sleep Final Mix as "volume 2," and Nomura strongly implied in a recent interview that Dream Drop Distance would be the last title before the "KH3" we're all waiting for. Whether or not it will appear with that title is a different story, but yeah.
Oh, not saying it's Square's fault or anything, just trying to figure out why they'd do it. Other series are guilty of it too.

And making multi-platform games, iirc, is kind of a pain? Porting between dissimilar consoles seems like it'd be a lot of work, it might not pay out in the end?

I think my heart sank when I read the article title......v.v

Yes, some things within the game could use a little improving, however, the series as a whole is amazing! I do dislike the different consoles, (I preferably like the PS systems best) but I suppose it's kinda cool that they try to experiment by using the different platforms out there.
The story may be a bit confusing, but once you catch on to what is going on (and pay attention), you can't wait to find out what happens next! The spin-offs may not have been very good, but they were fun to play :) Besides, I kinda enjoy the suspense of waiting to see what will happen next

Everyone has their opinions.....he may dislike the game, but there are still us and all of the other KH fans out there who will love and support it until the end and after.

I actually thought so, too, until I went to reread the interview. Nomura said that 3D is "the story that happens right before KH3." He said 'story,' not 'game.' Knowing him, that's deliberate.

That totally pissed me off somewhat. that idiot didn't know what he was talking about. I bet u the idiot didn't even finish playing any of the other side games.
All the Kingdom Hearts games give us more info nd everything that's happened in 358/2 Days nd Re coded, and birth by sleep will be connected to the future games. Chain of Memories was connected to KH 1, 2 , 358/2 and recoded.

When virtual Sora finally told Namine "Thank you" i wanted to cry so badly, cuz it's been so long since Sora promised he would say thanks nd i just loved it!!

The people who wrote this probably thought COD and FFXIII were great games. Hell I have always been a fan of KH and will always be a fan of KH. I feel that the story is simply working its way up to a grand finale. I do admit that many of these spinoffs are crazy and seem unimportant at the moment. But then again, I feel everything happens for a reason and I refuse to say the series is bad before it is even finished.

Wasn't the one with Xemnas an artificial Kingdom Hearts and the place Aqua was in is the realm of darkness? Not sure about the KH1 though. I only thought this because I just recently read the Xehanort Reports from BBS which said whoever goes into Kingdom Hearts can fundamentally change the worlds and whoever goes in becomes something more than human. Though this is all coming from a report years before Birth by Sleep took place so my bad.

ahhhh IGN the place where none of the writers know what a good game is. Only game they think is great and spot on is Call of Duty. I mean yeah Call of Duty isn't that bad but it gets totally unplayable online a good amount of times with all the hacks and glitches and its definitely not better than Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy or any Square Enix game in general.

Well, I can understand if someone doesn't like KH. But this guy doesn't really seem to understand the series as a whole. He thinks that because the story is complex, that it is horribly written? That is just very ignorant on his part. Oh how silly.

      What idiot..?

Reading that article was like a big slap in the face....with a Honda. It's like they never even played any of them! O_O Um, how can millions of players/readers/fans be wrong? Oh, yeah, World Of Warcraft...nevermind about that then. But still! It's a great series! >:/

I blame Nintendo. I mean they totally ruined Kingdom Hearts with Re: Coded and Days...And I don't just mean with the inferior graphics but Re: Coded's plot was just filler...and don't even get me started on how Days ended..."Who else will I have Icecream with?" Really now?

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about Nintendo being behind this though.

The only relation to Nintendo that the games have is the fact that they're released on Nintendo consoles. Nomura is the guy behind the story.

That doesn't make any sense, the trailer for BBSV2 was in BBSFM. Why would BBSFM have a trailer for itself unlocked in the secret ending? It's real, new KH titles are always announced through secret endings.

You're completely wrong. First of all, Nintendo didn't hold Nomura down and say "YOU HAVE TO DEVELOP FOR THE DS," they chose to do that. Second, Nintendo didn't hold Nomura down and tell them to end Days with "Who else will I have ice cream with?", Nomura wrote that story himself. And as for Coded being filler, it was originally developed for mobile phones, not the DS. Nintendo just supplied the medium, they literally had nothing to do with the story.

I agree on the console jumping around Square is obsessed with when it comes to Kingdom Hearts. It kind of feels like Kingdom Hearts has just become a side-project that they're experimenting on with different consoles before they release another major title. Some may argue that Kingdom Hearts wouldn't be Kingdom Hearts without the Disney aspect, but I think they need to make a game without Disney in it. To the story line, Disney characters don't mean anything other than Mickey. It would also help develop the story more clearly, seeing as though they wouldn't have to compromise for Disney's liking. And Mickey was only a good character when he was mysterious and worked in the shadows with Riku being the only person actually fighting alongside him. It gave a much more realistic feel to Mickey and Riku's relationship seeing as though they are both the more mysterious characters of the series. I think everyone can agree that Xemnas' battle with Riku as your own party member and him actually being useful and it seemed nostalgic was twenty times better than ever having ridiculous Disney characters ruin the game's experience. People who don't like the story because it is complex might be able to enjoy it if Disney characters weren't constantly ruining any serious moments and bringing unnecessary conflicts to the series. Birth By Sleep was the best story line wise. Is it a coincidence that you fought only by yourself and some times with other original characters? Disney didn't conflict with the story at all and that's what was great about Birth By Sleep. I haven't played Re:Coded, nor have I played 358/2 Days, but I can definitely say I understand all of the story thus far. If asked questions about Xion, I wouldn't be able to answer anything other than she's like half Sora and all of his memories as the second half or something weird like that, though. Re:Coded didn't strike me as being anything other than a clarification for what the letter said and a trailer for Dream Drop Distance. While it's true that Kingdom Hearts has a very complex story and it takes a long time to explain it, I don't think that should subtract from the fact that it's still an amazing story overall. Cut Disney out of the equation and it's perfect. To be honest, I love how complex it is because I feel like I'm following a series that I grew up with, not because of the nostalgic characters and gameplay, but because of the story and I care about...well really I only care about Terra and Riku.

That was never confirmed to be a trailer. It was part of the final cutscene of the Secret Episode, and it's very possible that "BBSV2" was the real title of what's otherwise called the "Secret Episode." It might also have been a way to tease for 3D, especially given that it seems that it will have quite a bit to with the events of BBS, and thus could be considered a "Volume 2" in that sense.

edit: so my general thoughts towards the article is that it's pretty badly written, yeah, and all he seems to do is ***** about the series. but he's pretty much spot on fundamentally.

      1. The series is pretty confusing at this point, unless you've been following it since the beginning or have the patience to play through each game and try to understand it all.

      2. The series needs to calm the **** down and just stay on one system and one line of handhelds, seriously bro.

      3. Going through the same worlds over and over again is really annoying (see: olympus, halloween town, agrabah).

      4. Sora is a little *****.

Not about to say the article is great or anything, but he is not wrong either. Kingdom Hearts is very cluttered in its plot and has been overly diluted across handheld platforms. It takes some amount of effort to explain the complexity of the plot to someone. In terms of playability, as of KH3D, KH has been on six consoles/handhelds. It's impossible to play every single game unless you're an avid fan or borrow your friends handhelds.

obvious exaggerations aside, how can you possibly try and argue the series hasn't been jumping platforms? It's practically what it's known for at this point, apart from an overly convoluted plot. Also, KH3D is among the only decent looking games on the 3DS that isn't a port. Super Mario, Mario Kart, Luigis Mansion 2, and KH3D is about what it comes down to. :v

It isn't settling rivalries. It's settling my wallet.
