If you had the ability to change time, would you do it?

why do i ask that? well, in many movies and books about time, people are like "SURE!" but they encounter a problem...the fact that the entire future could be destroyed along with them...

a movie has its plotholes, it can figure out ways characters dont destroy the world or something....but if this was possible in real life...Its sort of like the Death Note concept. Just because you have the ability, doesnt always mean you can use it...

personally I wouldnt. All my mistakes and achievements could have never gotten me here. I wouldnt be the same person. I wouldnt have made this thread even. O_o

    what would you do?

    No, i don't think i would.

I don't really like where i am right now but going back and changing things is necessarily going to make things better, and why risk making it worse?

No, Einstein proved that time and space are the same thing so changing time will warp everything repeat EVERYTHING.So no

For me, I'd love to go back in time to stop my grandfather's death 3 years ago and then he'd still be alive but then again if he is still alive I wouldn't be in this website by now.

I don't think so. Sure, we'd have a lot more rockstars living among us again, but you never know how the smallest of things could proverbially rape the timeline. I think things are fine as they are at the moment, so there's no need for it, in my opinion.

    I personally would not.

However if I were the impulsive, selfish and TOO curious teenager that I could be, I would definitely do it for fun.

He did? I mean, I haven't taken physics yet, and have little grasp on Einstein's exact workings, but I don't recall ever reading about that.

it would be more appropriate: Would I if I had to.

My life ain't perfect, but it's the only one i've got, my past is what has made me what I am today and i've got regrets, everyone does, but I would not change them at all.

If it was impulse, save a life that second kind of thing, then yes i believe that I would only if there was no other way to do it.

As long as my flux capacitor and Mr. Fusion were fully powered up.

Well, you know this is all just hypothetical musings that could never be proven(I'm saying this for my sake not yours) or disproven. That said, I really have no idea what I would do. I'm the type that's accustomed to sitting and thinking about the trivialities of life and the small things that are a part of life's everyday routine. The concept of time is a human construct, or at least marking it's passage with arbitrary durations designated by some guy who just thought of it. To change history would be to break it in my opinion, but thinks are more interesting when broken. So yes, if I could exist outside time as well. No, If I couldn't and would have to live with my chaotic experiment in history and life. I'm a coward that way.

I think we'd all like to go back and prevent a family member or pet from dying or getting sick..or maybe even healing a relationship when you could or changing something we said.

BUT EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON..so no I wouldn't want to change time.

The obvious answer is yes but,if you look deeper it makes sense to be a no.

There would be no possible way of telling what would happen if you changed even one thing (see Sliding Doors for an example). So no I wouldn't. Who knows, the world wars might actually have been a good thing in some respects in terms of the development of the human race =/

Also the fact that Einstein proved time travel to be impossible, although it is feasibly possible to send messages through time, both forwards and backwards =]

If something was changed, it would create an alternate reality with the change in place. However, the original "timeline" would still survive and continue on as normal.

Just a thought on this topic:

As soon as you go back in time, you would be removed from the timeline. You aren't suppose to exist in the past, so you are defying the laws of space/time by doing so.

So even if you changed something that would result in you not being born, you would still be able to go back to the present, exisitng by whatever means enabled you to in the past. And then what? Would you never die? You would probably stop aging, due to the fact that you are now exempt from the laws of time.

Now then, to answer the actual question: No, I wouln't be able to do it. The littlest thing changed would have dramatic unpredicable effects. For example:

You go back in time, and hold the door open for someone at the grocery stoe.
They are then able to leave the store a full two seconds earlier.
This causes them to approach an intersection two seconds earlier, just as the light changes yellow.
Even though they originally stopped at the light, with their two-second head start they go through, as they will now make it before the light goes red.
Somebody coming the other way is rifling through their glove compartment, doesn't see that the light's red, and collides with the person going through the intersection.

And I'm sure you can map the rest out for yourself. The person you caused to have a traffic accident with now either be injured, dead, or simply late for wherever they were going. And things will continue to change and spiral away from the orignial timeline, all because or your act of courtesy.

So imagine then what would happen if you changed somethng much bigger; like stopping someone's death. You would change so much more that you set out to, and then possibly live forever with your desicion.

when i think about time and bending its laws for a long time it gets really weird and hard
but aside from that if i could go back i would change so many things
i would erase all the dictadors, WWII, details in my life and other stuff

Edit: if i could do all that i wouldnt be here and neither would many of us but the world would be a lot better

There have been times where I've wanted to change my past. But I'm happy with my life right now.My life isn't perfect but I'm happy with it.Without mistakes, you wouldn't be the person you are today. But if I had the possiblity to go back in time it would be for the people I love.I would go back and prevent from my best friend's dad to be ill.I would prevent him from going through what he's going through today.I would prevent the deaths of the people that aren't supposed to be dead.I would prevent when my grandpa got cancer. And many other things. And after all that,I probably wouldn't bothering doing something for me.The mistakes I did in my past has made me the type of person I am today.
