As everyone knows, I recovered from a long hiatus on YouTube not too long ago back in mid-January due to computer issues. Well, guess what? My PS2's appears to be going kapoot again. It's been showing signs for a while, though, but nothing that I wasn't able to get working again.

As of yesterday, it doesn't seem to want to read PS games at all and it's sometimes having somewhat of a hard time reading PS2 games. This is the one we got refurbished from GameStop, so I'll give credit where credit is due in that it has lasted a few years. The ones we bought brand new only lasted about two years, with the exception of my first one--the fat one--which lasted longer. One of them hardly even lasted a year.

Also, this isn't actually the first one it started acting up. It also did it about a little over a year ago, but I just applied some rubbing alcohol to the lenses, left it off all night, and tried again the next day, and boom! I tried that earlier today to no avail, but I am going to try again. I'll leave it off all night and part of the day tomorrow until I get back.

You can try hitting some thrift stores and yard sales. I've seen them going for $15 or $20 at them.

Monday night I rubbed some rubbing alcohol on the lenses, left the PS2 off all night, and I was able to get Breath of Fire III to load last night, so we'll see how long that lasts when I try to play it again later. Hopefully another year like last time.

I did find some refurbished PS2s, though: http://www.gamestop.com/browse?nav=16k-3-PlayStation+2+console,28zu0 We can always go down to Yakima if needed.

What would you guys recommend when the time comes? An original (fat) or a slim PS2? The original one, which was my first one and the one my dad bought for my birthday one year, lasted quite a while. I don't remember exactly how long, but I think at least five plus years, and I watched DVDs on it, which isn't recommended. (I'll ask my mom. She may remember.) Definitely longer than my slim ones that have lasted about two years, with the exception of one that lasted about a year and the refurbished one I currently have as the others were bought new. I'm not sure if that's a coincidence or not, though.

I've read that the original PS2's lasers are weaker, particularly the CD laser which reads PS games, and there are some safety concerns with the original console, but I'm not sure on the latter. I might have read it wrong.

Yeah I think original PS2 were even worse. For starters you had to rip them open to even be able to rub the lens with alcohol.

In case you didn' t know, sometimes the problem doesn' t stem from the lens itself, but from the plastic pieces slightly melting / getting out of alignment over time. I saw tutorials on youtube showing how to address that, but none of my screwdrivers were a match so I didn' t even manage to open the casing. I did however notice that putting some weight on the console at the right place/angle might fix it. That' s just a temporary fix though, once the pieces are too out of alignment that won' t suffice.
