    Icarus

Icarus sliced through the air. Ahead of him was his father, gliding just as gracefully. The wind flapped through his hair, thrusting it into his face and blinding him temporally each time. He flapped his makeshift wings and soared through the empty space. They floated on his hands and the feathers fluttered as the wind began to pick up.

“Icarus! Remember! Follow my path!” His father cried out to him from ahead. Icarus shook his hair out of his face and rolled his eyes. He just smiled and yelled back, “Don’t worry!” He signed and turned around in multiple circles before continuing on after his father.

He glanced his gaze up towards the sky in fascination. Apollo and his chariot glided across the clouds. The birds flew up near, and then soared back down to where he was, and then went back up. They bobbed up and down in the sky, in zigzags. He looked at his feathery wings, and then looked at his father. He quickly began to flap his wings and pushed upward. Soon, he was high above the clouds, and he could no longer see his father. The warmth of the sun pressured down on his cheeks, giving them a warm tingly sensation.

He closed his eyes and flew gently in the heavenly breezes. Something burning danced on his hand. He moved to brush it off, and his eyes widened in surprise. A hot dab of wax rested on his hand. He looked back at his wax and feather wings. He let out a small gasp. His wings were melting. He gapped his mouth in amazement and stared up at the chariot closing in on him. For a glimpse of a second, he saw the face of Apollo, strong and stern, gazing down on him. Suddenly, the fiery horses dragging the chariot charged into him, and he was flung downwards. As he fell, he struggled to fix his melted wings, coated in the melted wax. Knowing he was going to die, he relaxed his body and let himself fall. He smiled, letting that image of Apollo’s face replay in his head over, over, and over again…

He slammed into the water with such force, his soul was torn from his body. Forever, he would see Apollo’s face over and over again, reminding him of the time that he flew…and dared to take the chance to fall.

In the near by land, people went on with their work. Fishermen hooked their bait, ploughmen tended to their fields. Sailors sailed, children played with each other. Weavers weaved, bakers baked. Kings ruled, warriors fought. And no one took a second glance at the boy who pushed beyond the human limits and saw the gods… and plunged back down to earth. And his father just kept flying on into the unknown sky.

Rosey when I rule the World I am hiring you to write things for me :)

I liked this telling of the ancient myth, it's simple without all the fuss but still retains its impact.
