When people think "anime" they think of animation that originated from Japan...so like bleach and naruto and other anime. I could see why you would think that Avatar is not an anime, however on technical terms, Muffin is right.

First is how the Japanese consider the terms, second is the English language interpretations.

I know I probably be flamed for this, but meh. I don't think Avatar is an anime. Sure, it uses the style but, by my definition, anime is animation from Japan. Every country calls their animation different names, so if a particular show is not from a place where they call it that, it should not be called it. American animation is cartoons, Japanese is anime, and, just for the sake of an example, Mexican animation is called dibujos. I agree it's a regional thing, all drawing style set aside.

I personally don't like the use of "***", but meh, whatever.

    On-topic:
I don't think it's an anime. Anime, in my opinion, is animation made in Japan (or, at the very least, by Japanese people). If it's something like Avatar or Teen Titans (which are American in origin but anime-style), then it's an anime-styled cartoon.

I never really considered it an anime.

I guess I'd call it an anime because of the style it is drawn in and how it plays out with scenes that are more done in an anime fashion than in other cartoon styles. If I wanted to be more specific, I'd call it American anime, so as to differentiate it from Japanese anime. There are other anime shows not just done in Japan after all. And as someone mentioned, if you actually asked someone in Japan what an American comic was, that person probably would say manga since it is their generic term for 'comic'. They'd probably say 'anime' for any cartoon they might see too from somewhere else as that's their word for 'cartoon'. We differentiate more based on style than they do really, because we like our sub-divisions. So, in 'proper' form I'd say it's fine to call it anime or American anime.

i think i agree here... anime just refers to japanese animation or something like that, right? so avatar really doesnt work. sorry people were so close-minded about it.

The word *** is horrible FTW and isnt nice tbh~

Manga is released from British and American artists also for example, they cant change the name of as tyle just cuz it isnt from the country of origin. Thats like saying to someone who is japanese and lives in England, im sorry because u live in england u r not japanese cuz ur nt in ur country of origin, u just look japanese. Anime is Anime, Manga Is Manga no matter who draws it and no matter which country it originates from :P

The word *** is a word, an abbreviation of ******, and originally, before it attained it's homosexual meaning, meant a bundle of wood, usually to be burned. What matters is the connection the word implies. I interpret it as an adjective to describe something that is exceptionally stupid (as, no offense, homosexuality is, on a genetic standpoint - no offspring). Others may interpret it as homosexual, or a derogatory term for it. It's all relative.

You are exceedingly close in that ****** does mean a bundle of wood. But the reason it is used as a derivative term against homosexuals is that ******s were used to burn homosexuals at like stakes.

And witches. But, in any case, my point is that language evolves, it has evolved in the past, and now the word *** has evolved again to lose most of it's homo meaning, in certain contexts, and just mean "exceptionally stupid" or "exceptionally stupid people/person".

Requiring anime to only japan is basically being selfish... Many people in America and Canada say that "oh look at this new anime drawing i drew." Should we be allowed to say that its not anime? Spaghetti is basically known as the largest in the country of italy. But people elswhere should have to call it differently because they dont use it the most?

I think, if anything, it should be called "American anime" or "anime-style cartoon".

Avatar an anime? Yes and no.

To me, it's some sort of pseudo-anime that was created in America, and should be given such a title. It's like anime, but it isn't.

In the style of an anime. I can write a book in the exact same style as J.K. Rowling, (Okay, no I can't, but go along with it.) but does that mean It's a J.K. Rowling book/Harry Potter book? Of course not. People will say that it's written in the style of Rowling's series, but they won't label it a Harry Potter book or a Rowling book.

Same with Avatar. It's animated in the style of Japanese Animation, but the question is whether it is Japanese animation. Is it in the style? Yes. Is it made in Japan, by a Japanese company? No. So it's in the style of anime, but not an anime.

However it is done rather well and I've certainly seen worse.

Oh, and I thought **** were cigarettes.
