Idk what Japan thinks drills are, but never in my life have I seen a drill that looks like that.

Of course that doesn't lend itself to animation as well as the animeified drills.

 

Have you never seen a mining drill? Sure, they're little spikier than in Gurren Lagann, but it's still pretty accurate when you consider that that's the kind of drill that Simon has been using since the beginning of the series.
