While this happens everywhere, it's obviously become an epic problem in america. I wouldnt be surprised if there were similar percentages for other subjects like math, english or science.
Isn't america wealthy, and well provided-for, with lots of everything, unlike poorer third-world countries. Why have they allowed this uncaring nature in children to develop? Hopefully it doesnt get worse, or the american adults (who were once these uncaring kids) will be worse.

EDIT: oop, sozz that's too much, i'll keep it short next time...

You seem rather proud of the fact that you're completely ignorant. So, wouldn't that make you a prime example of the topic at hand? You know, the topic of students today being complete fucktards

What other discussion is even going on here? You mean the one where your friend says something stupid, and then you quote them saying "I AGREE!", and then you say something stupid, and they post saying "I AGREE!"?

Nothing about me posting is preventing someone else from doing so, so I don't have to stop posting just to "let" other people post.

Repliku, who appears to have posted the longest post in this thread, wrote, or at least officially stated the rules. So it seems safe to assume that he's not going to write a post that's so long it's against the discussion section's rules.
I'm unable to find any rule that states a limit to the length of posts here. I don't see a problem with any lengthy, almost debate-like posts. You do not have to read them. You will also find that many threads in this section have paragraph-long posts, not two-line sized posts. It's up to the member how detailed they are, while debating is reccommended for the Debate Corner.

Please stop arguing, as this thread has become unfriendly. Please discuss the topic, in the way that you choose. There is no need to insult the way that people choose to post.

Should I have gotten a staff member?...

it wouldn't hurt to have but whatever

anyways, on topic. geography isn't THAT important in my opinion. i don't even think i know that many state capitals. i DO know some general facts like the 7 continents, where some of the major countries are (like Britain, China, Australia). but all in all, i don't feel as though it's a big deal.

Exactly! People don't really care, so they don't learn. Still, I don't see quite how it matters sooo much. It'd be much worse if american youth had a bad percentage for the other main subjects.
I like geography because I like finding out about other countries and lifestyles, but I dont find it really important to the general person. Some people need the knowledge, but if you're not gonna use it...

I have to disagree with you on this Evil.
I have asked kids first hand about WW2 and they were able to answer, while when i asked them about Germany's campaign in Africa, they stare at me dumbfounded. You may argue that that is History classes fault, however one kid told me that Africa was really close to Germany so it would make sense. Geography is just as important as all the other subjects.

I blame computer programs that are designed to teach kids these days then underpaid, under appreciated teachers.

You're gonna hate it if you ever go to college or university. Heck, you must hate school cause that's all teachers do.

As for Geography; i'll use myself as an example; in the past it was of no interest to me. I guess it was my Geography class that put me off so i'm not great at pointin' out countries on the map but i could point you in the general direction. I only know of other countries/locations from my other studies (History/Politics) n' the news.

This isn't just a problem for Americans. I know many Scots that don't know well known locations within Scotland. It doesn't interest 'em so they stay within their own town/city unless it's to go on holiday to countries like Spain. Many of the younger kids couldn't give a damn 'bout anythin' in their own country let alone abroad.

It's not so much of knowin' where in the world a country like Sudan is but they know next to nothin' 'bout recent events that occur in countries that may be in war or hurt by natural disaster.

yea it's not THAT important because you can just look up those trivial facts if you ever need them for some reason. i can understand why people would be concerned if people didn't know something like math but geography isn't that important. of course there's more to geography than just where countries are, i think that class also teaches people how to read maps and stuff. i'm not entirely sure, i was never taught this in school.
well, that's arguable. i do think that the Geography course teaches things a person can simply just look up but i never had this course so i'm not 100% sure what i'm talking about.
i feel knowing what the countries are all about is more important as well. this could include (but not limited to) the history, the culture, recent events.

I completely agree about the teachers being underpaid and underappreciated. I expect they are in America, and I know they are here in Australia too. Smaller schools also suffer when there are inexperienced teachers, because the school has little control in what teachers they have employed. And then the students learn less...

I think that an understanding of geography and the world can really broaden a person's outlook on things. In my area, geography is part of society & environment, and it covers geography, history and politics. This might not be essential to everyone, but it does provide a better understanding of things.

i agree, most of the time its actually the students fault, maybe because they can't be bothered to pay attention or just like annoying the teacher

I kinda know where Iraq is.Damn,I'm not even sure. The reason we don't know is because we don't pay attention to where it is and or look on the map.I think it's around Afghan though.I dunno!
