First off, no "kid" is going to randomly hop on a plane to the Phillipines. If someone is taking a trip halfway across the globe, it's going to be an Adult, and a god damn Adult is going to research what the country is like that they just spent $2000 on plane tickets to fly to.

Secondly, why do you seem to have this strange assumption that peoples just....travel the world? You seem to like statistics, did you know that 70% of Americans will never travel outside of their home state, much less out of the country?

This is not solely an American issue, and frankly you're being quite ignorant to say that it is. As someone 2 posts above your pointed out, why do you think this is only a problem with America? They live in Australia, but do they have any particular knowledge of the world either? Any moreso then the average American education? This is a worldwide issue that the education systems don't properly educate people on geography, but it's also an issue of the fact that the majority of the time the knowledge may have been learned, but forgotten because in most peoples lives it is never applied int he first place. Most people don't have a daily inclination to wonder "Hmm, I wonder where Haiti is?" or "When is the rainy season in Brazil?", because it's not relevant to most peoples everyday lives.

Geography is important but at the same time, Americans aren't the only ones that can't identify other nations they should know of on a map. The point that some Americans get blasted for is they can't even identify the 50 states properly. If you can't know your own nation, how can you know much else?

However, the problem of not knowing the world around you is hardly an American problem. There are people in any country that do not know and even if people learn skills in school, after a while, sometimes as little as 2 years after, you forget it all unless you keep up with it. In a way, people now can be prepared for trips etc by looking up the area they are going to on the internet to even include weather trackers, local geography, climate etc and a history of climate, about the culture and landmarks. I do still consider geography to be important and think people should at least know their -own- countries but I know many Americans who do not even know where a state two states away from their own is. However, I can say that I've met people of other countries too that they were lucky if they could name continents off. It's not schools I necessarily blame for this. It's more that a person's memory holds so much unless they are blessed with a photographic or eidetic memory. After a couple years, if we don't consider it important, that stuff begins to fade. However, you can always learn it and become smarter about each place by just studying now and then on a particular place for amusement when bored.

    oh great, another lecture.

all Hopefulwishes asked for is an opinion, not a god damn speech that'll bore everyone away.
so why don't you give a 2 line comment and say how much you know and what your opinions are.
that will keep everyone happy, and if you god damn reply to this, you can just get lost.
    You have no friends.
And because of you, this thread is really depressing, noone wants to see some guys argue over a simple matter because you got offended by a little comment. i mean most guys, like me skipped the whole lecture.

damn now i made a lecture -_- sorry Hopefulwishes :(

You must be half brain-dead if you think 3 paragraphs is a god damn "lecture".

Why should anyone be limited to writing "2 line" summations of what they think just to appease the fact that you're an illiterate twat who can't be assed to read?

Up until this point this wasn't particularly an argument, we're having a discussion here, seeing as this is the "discussion" section, and not the "let's circlejerk and agree with one another" section. If you can't deal with someone saying something contrary to what you said, then don't make stupid comments.

Also, I really like the "you have no friends" bit, it really exemplifies your flawless middle-school reasoning.

What is the reason for the 60%?
Answer: the downturn in public education mixed with a majority of kids desire to not study/learn.

I've been out of high school for almost five years, and i can say that it's shocking to see the level of intellect slip from even those that graduated a year after I did.

    I blame the electronic media.

yeah that is true, but most of the time, it's the chavs that distract the class, or people think its cool not to bother.
