I just saw The Last Airbender...

He used it as fuel for his fire bending jetpack.

 

Assuming that bending is passed on genetically and that it is the recessive trait, there would be one possible genotype per Bender, bb. Thus, Aang and Katara reproducing would produce all benders, which is good. The only problem now is which of Waterbending and Airbending is the dominant trait. The possible genotypes would be:
aw

aw
aw

Where a is Air and w is Water. Assuming each bending trait is equal in dominance, this would result in each child having a mixed phenotype, thus allowing them to bend both Water and Air. With this in mind, only the second generation of the A/K lineage could be pure Airbenders, and that's only if they inbreed, which it is safe to assume they will not. Then again, Aang might end up having several wives from the various nations which would complicate things, as if he ends up having children with a Firebender and then an Earthbender, a generation of Dual Benders could spring up. Guys, I think I have the basic concept behind Legend of Korra.

Or Aang could energy bend people into Airbenders. But I like my theory better.

 

It's a shame he could no longer apply it as fuel when Aang had him strapped down to the ground before Energybending him.

I thought about this earlier.

My conclusion:

People who are not the Avatar being able to dualbend would ruin Avatar.

 

I got this far before I facepalmed.

 

They could also combine into some other element too. But that would just be far too cliche. Granted, no more cliche than Dualbending, but cliche all the same.

No because it's ONLY dualbending. You're only REALLY the avatar if you can use all four elements not just two.

Okay, I just figured out that bending can't possibly be genetic because if it were, that means the first human Earth/Air/Firebenders would have been the result of bestiality.

So I'm gonna go with the Energybending theory for now.
