one of my friends has this stupid thing, and the only reason i bring this up is because i know there are a lot of people like is, where if there's any screaming in music she just automatically won't listen to it. and that frustrates me because (now i cant play like any music i like for her) there's no appealing to that. there's no "well the music's great if you can just get past the vocals." theres a lot of music i like where i have to almost tune out the vocals because i dont like them. hell, i ALWAYS like singing over screaming. and i almost never remark on good screaming. just not my thing. but to see a person ignore all musical value based on the fact that theres unclean vocals is just such an alien menality to me. what the **** decade is this? do you have a kid who's rockin out to i want to hold your hand? christ. get over it. i understand not liking music. i dont like rap. but the reason i dont like it is not the rapping itself, i can get past that. its the music. so to say you wont give anything with x vocal quality a chance seems so ****ing childish.

like im here vibin on this

and i cant play it for them because despite all of the stellar music and vocals some of those vocals arent clean

I will listen when I have my good speakers and headphones (not my ****** phone speakers) but maybe have her check out Brand New (and I think you would like them too actually). They have minimal screaming in their early stuff, with Daisy there's much more, but IMO they're a good transition band. Deja has some here and there, TDAGARIM I think it's only in Sowing Season

I totally see how frustrating that is, though I'm lucky enough to not really know anyone like that in my age range.

Screaming in songs is kinda tough to get right, and it's pretty subjective just like all other things in music (I have a friend who dislikes The Beatles,) but maybe you could leak music that has a little screaming over a period of time?

i actually don't like brand new
they're a brand of post-hardcore that never appealed to me - a side that's more indie.
i tried to like them, i really really did, but they're one of those things that's just not for me despite seeming like they should be.
but i never thought to play that for her. thats a good idea.[DOUBLEPOST=1459878921][/DOUBLEPOST]
she told me one time "if it has screaming in it, i won't listen to it." i dont know how to deal with that

and lets be clear im not actively trying to get her to like music i like. i do not care. its just an aggravating thing i see in people
these are usually the same people who call any band with any amount of screaming "screamo"
thrice and at the drive-in are not screamo.

I'm okay with screaming but people complaining about screaming and refusing to listen to it isn't a problem. People with a lack of appreciation for anything that doesn't follow strict pop music format are(4/4 or 3/4 time, verse-chorus-verse structure, a maximum of 4 chords per song, etc).

I feel so very annoyed that people would make these generalizations. Thrice have played so many different variations of rock (I don't know The Drive-In)

"Screamo" is its own kind of music.

    Ugh.

i could never get into them
i think its because there's no vocals
and thats not something that usually bothers me but here its a real turn off for some reason

I totally understand the context of this post and that it's either just satirical or fishing for reactions, but sweet baby Jesus batman, this shiet tilts me off the face of the earth.

The whole screamo thing is ridiculous. Hell you don't see people calling bands like Boston or Led Zeppelin "singo." So I really don't understand why people feel the need to call it that. Call me sensitive or whatever because I actually play in certain genres that have screaming, but to be honest most musical ignorance tilts me so hard. I'm not the biggest rap or country fan but it gets annoying when I hear people discredit those genres without even attempting to look into them for more than half a second. I've tried both and am not the biggest fan of either, but there are some rappers I don't mind.

Tbh tho, when was the last time that demanding respect for anything worked on the majority of people. Some people just don't care and they don't have a reason to care, so why change.

    Meh

its a derogatory term that blends scream and emo based on bands like From First to Last (which is demeaning in itself, but thats another topic) which has been expanded to apply to anything that has screaming in it. so its meaning is about as solid as "emo" itself. there is a screamo genre and there is an emo genre, however these have been mostly obscured by the blurry line separating culture and music. the point of what im saying is that, in practical use, these words are essentially just "i dont understand this and i dont like it, but i dont want to understand it so im just gonna hurl this word that i imagine to apply based on very basic qualities i recognize"

but i dont entirely blame them. at some point the word screamo became public knowledge and you can't exactly expect the guy or gal who only listens to The Civil Wars to have any conception of what that is. likewise, i know literally nothing about The Civil Wars and only use them as an example because my friend likes them and played them for me and they're boring as ****. so for all i know they have loose ties to like black metal or something

Using a word without knowing the meaning or context behind it is such a good idea

i remember up till high school, like 10th grade, i hated anything with screaming/growling in it but then I decided to give it a chance and started listening to some ****** metalcore bands, despite not really enjoying it.

but it grew on me and i started to love it in a pretty short amount of time

then i moved on to metal instead of metalcore, and so on and so forth.

basically all i listen to now, with a side of anime/game soundtracks

i remember avenged sevenfold, but they weren't really metalcore, they were just popular at the time
Confined by As I Lay Dying is basically what got me started
Then there was Bullet for my Valentine, Underoath, August Burns Red, Demon Hunter, The Devil Wears Prada. I can't remember many others.

The best metalcore band i listened to was, and still is, Killswitch Engage tho.

Isn't the singer for Killswitch Engage black? I remember there was a rock band with that kind of sound that had a black singer and I thought that was cool because I would never have known just hearing them.

first one was a white guy, then the black guy, and now they're back to the white guy because the black guy had some sort of issue. With singing, not the band
