Actually, I'm literally overboard. I'm too stubborn to use my only means of communication to call for help, so I'm posting to KHV instead.

I like to talk about grammar as much as the average language student, but when it comes to correcting people on the internet, you have to consider that a) not everyone speaks English as their first language and b) not everyone has the same level of education as you, which is okay especially when there people in their preteens frequenting this forum. Correcting people's grammar is elitist and prescriptivist.

Unless it's glaringly obvious and practically illegible, idc how you type, mang.

oh and hi there claw #2.

Then they should use a language that they are good at. If you can't do something right, you should either try harder and learn from how people correct you or use an alternative that you can do right. If your best language is Urdu and you can't use English effectively, then you should just use Urdu and let the people who care about what you have to say run it through Google Translate where the mistakes won't be your fault.

But I only do it in the hope that the people who I correct will learn from that correction. Is it so wrong to want people to do things to the best of their ability?

    Also:
What exactly do you mean by that? I looked it up, but I couldn't find anything that matched the context here very well and the most fitting definitions that I could find were really vague.

No.. just no for having people write in their mother tongue simply because their English isn't perfect. I'm going to go ahead and assume that you're joking about that (..haha..). If they want to type in broken English, so be it.

I'll be honest and say that I have corrected non-native English speakers in the past when they have faltered, but I have always done it privately. There is no use in turning a thread into a debate about spelling and grammar when you can advise someone privately and allow the thread to move along.

Prescriptivism is the attitude/belief in 'prescribing grammar'. That is, to believe that there is only one true/standard grammar and that everything else is incorrect. The opposite of this is descriptivism.

"Prescriptivism may refer to: Linguistic prescription, the prescribing of rules for language; Universal prescriptivism, a meta-ethical theory of the meaning of moral ..."

The blurb given on Google for the Wikipedia page.

I actually wasn't joking. If you can't do something effectively by the most common method, then it only makes sense to try a method that you're more familiar with. I'd rather have an awful but readable Google translation of a post in Urdu than a post in English that amounts to total gibberish.
That was one of the vague definitions that I was talking about.

I don't see how that's vague at all.

It's funny how easy it is to set up a trap for you Amaury, you always dive in head first. ^^

That is correct. I wanted to mutilate that posts grammar as much as possible. It's sort of like night crawlers when you want to go fishing for an Amaury or Key.
