I loved my first week. I have great teachers, and I'm taking some interesting classes. My group of friends and I really stick together, and I have a pretty bland group of classmates, I just ignore them largely. I don't expect it to great all the time but, I'm trying to remain optimistic.

i feel compelled to say something to this, but i dont know what. i want to say something negative, mainly because my experiences have been 100% negative, but i dont want to ruin your optimism. i guess it largely depends on the area, and school youre attending.

    Not really...?

Your personality and attitude towards others can make or break your high school (or any kind of school, generally) experience, no?

it doesnt matter what type of person you are when you are surrounded by bigots intent on putting themselves above people who dont conform to the mainstream way of thinking, acting, etc. in an ideal society we should be able to control the environment around us and the mood of our every day lives based on how we handle the situations we are presented with and how we interact with those around us. however this world (at least the one im living in) is anything but ideal. in my school if you dont wear xxxxxl pants around your ankles, and white shirts that could fit 5 people in them, or pretty much dare to wear anything slightly different that what people would consider 100% masculine, your labeled a ******. im not one of these people, but its because of this i chose to not associate with people in my school. i have friends, but none of them go to the same school i do. and of course not all of the people are this way, but the large majority is. im not saying your experience will be as bad as mine, but dont naively think that your personality or attitude alone could define how well your hs career is.

Alright then, but why let it get to you? Yes, there will always be that person, or people, who think themselves higher than everyone else. It's natural, and I can guarantee every person has come in contact with someone like this at least once. Your point is correct, society has this cookie-cutter image of what everybody should be like, but why does it matter? You be your own person, and don't let anyone bring you down. I know this sounds easy, but it's much harder. I've not been bullied, only slightly in my middle school, so I have little experience. But let me tell you about someone who was bullied in my school:

There was a girl named Mackenzie, and she was in my grade. She was overall kind, but very... odd. She wasn't like everyone else. Even though my school has uniforms, she still found a way to make herself stand out (various accessories). She was immediately singled out and everyone began to pick on her. Everyday she was subjected to verbal, and sometimes physical, torture and yet she always had a smile on her face. She was always kind to everyone, offering them a seat or to help them with their work (which they denied). Soon enough, everyone left her alone because they saw that their jeers and rude comments meant nothing to her.
One day, I approached Mackenzie and asked her how she did it.
    "Did what?" she asked.
"Ignoring everyone's comments and always being... cheerful!" I replied. And her answer shocked me, she simply said,
"Because I'm comfortable with myself. I know who I am, and I won't change for anyone no matter what they say about me or do to me. I am me, and no else can change that but myself."
You see, even though this poor girl was subjected to torture for most of her middle school career, she was always optimistic and eventually, it stopped.

Now you may be asking yourself, oh what does this story have to do with anything, and I'll tell you.
It's about a girl who didn't conform to social standards, stood out, and was herself. She didn't let anyone bring her down, and eventually the bullying stopped. I just hope this inspired you, or whoever read this, to be yourself and don't worry about what others say, because there's only one of you.

And on another note, I wasn't saying that just your personality and attitude affect your career in school. I was saying that it has a much more prominent role than you gave do. So please don't call me naive until you actually understand what I'm saying.

If you read my post correctly, it says:

If you thought about it for a second instead of making an abrupt, incorrect post, you'd see that the 'Not really...?' was implying that personality and attitude weren't a 'lesser extent' than your school or area point.

Man your high school just sounds unlucky. There are always people like that but you're either using hyperbole or you're just really unlucky.

i was never bullied, sure ive gotten a couple slanderous comments but i hardly consider that bullying, and it makes little to no difference to me. its not a matter of not letting things get to you. the simple fact that people could be that way disgusts me. i admire your idealistic way of thinking, and i hope your time in hs will be better than mine was, but do realize that there will be things that your attitude cannot control. though like i said earlier it largely depends on where you go to school

For me attitude was huge. Most of my friends were from LD classes, but we were also nerds/geeks. We jokingly dubbed ourselves the reject clique and played Yugioh at the lunch table. You better believe we were made fun of pretty much every day for that, but we just laughed at the fact that they cared enough to try and put us down.

Granted most of our "bullies" weren't that bad. One time a group came up with a bunch of random yugioh cards they seemed to have had from childhood and wrote all over them (so the Judge Man had 22000 attack and such) and challenged us. We went through 5 duels and I beat them every time. I know it's lame, but that day was a lot of fun.
