Where is it actually revealed in Kingdom Hearts that Riku was to be the original Keyblade wielder, but when he opened his heart to darkness it was passed on to Sora?
I don't remember this information actually being revealed in the game.

When Riku took the Keyblade from Sora he told Sora that it was meant for him, and that Sora was just the 'delivery boy' as he puts it.

Yep, i thought the same thing, it doesn't really tell you until you reach Hollow Bastion and you meet up with Riku...that stupid...(some choice words here)

I think the Keyblade refused Riku when he embraced darkness, so it went to Sora, that has a pure heart

Really? I always thought that line was traditional cocky Riku rather than anything else.

Right, but it didn't really make that clear. I actually had no idea what that actually meant until I researched it and found out that the Keyblade was originally meant to choose Riku, but when he submitted himself to darkness the Keyblade chose Sora instead, as RoxasSora2010 said (which was correct).
It never explains this, I suppose in a way it does indirectly, but not in a way that describes that this is the case.

EDIT: Also, to answer Deathsight44's question, on Destiny Islands when Sora first receives the Keyblade. That was when Riku opened himself up to darkness, and as a result the Keyblade chose Sora instead.

In Hollow Bastion, Riku took the keyblade from Sora and then later, the Keyblade rejects Riku and goes back to Sora because Riku went into darkness and Sora had a pure heart.

This is true but I'm talking about the Keyblade ORIGNALLY being meant to be given to Riku, meaning back in Destiny Islands.
The scene you're talking about DOES involve another switch of the Keyblade's choice as its wielder, but I'm talking about the original choice of making Riku the wielder, but changing it's mind and choosing Sora once Riku turned to the darkness.

Well...there was a part of the story that explained that Riku was actually supposed to be the true wielder, but Sora somehow got it due to a reason that was untold, yet, this reason is to be found out, which could be introduced in KH3.

Yes it did. There would be no other way he would be able to take it from Sora in Hollow Bastion.

Okay, I read somewhere in the comments for the Birth By Sleep Trailer (On YouTube) that Riku was suppose to get the keyblade... and they said something about Terra originally chosing Riku.... something like that anyways. Hope that helps.

That's what I thought too. Riku always seemed to be a little inclined to Darkness to me.

Well, what i noticed was that the Keyblade was controlled by friendship, Sora was caring about the keyblade more than Kairi donald goofy, and even Riku so Riku gained the control but when Sora Made it to where Riku is the beast, Donald and goofy were all on his side and all he wanted was for KAiri and Riku to come back so they can get to the islands again so he recieved the keyblade because he cared for his friends

    Just a theory i have ^.^

the keyblade rejected riku because of the darkness in his heart and sora was pure of heart so he was the next candidate

Riku was always the intended Keyblader. At the beginning of the game to me he did not come off cocky. He came off as cool and collected most of the time. He did train Sora, played around with him trying to coax him to ask out Kairi and well, a lot of the kids apparently there did respect him and he worked with them on fighting too. He seemed the most responsible one of the kids on DI, other than Wakka, who also seemed to watch over others there. I disagree that Riku was a 'bad' kid but instead had naivete, though he was more 'aware' than Sora. The kids, being from DI, would not really think of someone betraying them outright. It was a nice area where they were probably sheltered from some of the worst traits of people. He did not know what would happen when he opened the door or he would not have wasted time making a raft that he mostly worked on. I'm pretty sure he was told that opening the door would connect his world (Destiny Islands) to other worlds, and so he could leave with his friends and go exploring. Xehanort's Heartless knew this as Xehanort had opened the door at Hollow Bastion, which connected the worlds to it and also they received a visit from King Mickey shortly after. This is mentioned in the Ansem Reports. Instead of doing what it did for him though, there was a clear attack prepared by Xehanort's Heartless so Destiny Islands was destroyed until Sora later would restore it.

In a scene with Riku as a boy and Sora, Sora leaves the secret cave, and Riku turns to see the door glowing. That is the first clue that Riku is different and Sora did not notice the door so he was not chosen at that time.

When Riku leaves going through the Darkness, the Keyblade after appears and Sora has it. Sora received the Keyblade because Riku had left. Maleficent, when Riku appeared in Hollow Bastion, knew what the boy was and was determined to use him so she filled his head with some lies and because Sora didn't really stand up for Riku against Donald strongly, Riku believed her. The second scene in the game to show where Riku was actually the Keyblade wielder intended is at this scene where he shows up initially in Traverse Town. He held out his hand and the Keyblade went to him and he checked it out. However, not knowing it was 'for him', when Sora yelled "Hey! Give it back!", Riku gave it back to Sora, thus letting Sora continue his quest.

Riku's flaw was in his personality that he wanted to be 'needed'. He spent a lot of time doing favors for friends and all because he felt he needed to do things for others so they would not leave him. Maleficent played on this to use him. He became desperate as time continued through the game because he felt he had to find Kairi, and when he did, she was in a bad state. If Riku and Sora could have communicated better and distractions weren't around, Sora might have been able to tell him he saw visions with Kairi, but unfortunately, Sora did not realize he had Kairi's heart within him till the near ending of the game. Riku was told by Maleficent that Kairi's Heart was through the Door to Darkness, which is why he had to help her collect the Princesses of Heart to open the door. He was going to go through, which Captain Hook tried to talk him out of it, saying that her Heart was long gone and consumed by Darkness, but by then he was convinced this was the only option and he felt he could save her.

So the story ends up where Riku confronts Sora. Maleficent just prior to Sora and Beast showing up obviously now finally revealed to Riku what he was and so he took the Keyblade from Sora, realizing that it would be the way to help Kairi. When Sora confronts him again, he gets the Keyblade back because Riku was falling to Darkness and chose to go on with it alone rather than work with Sora to help Kairi as he did not believe it was Sora's intention. Darkness had corrupted Riku, as was shown in glimpses where you look at Riku's eyes as he gains more and more Darkness because Maleficent continues to keep opening him up more to it. Because everyone, including Sora had Darkness in their Hearts (other than the Princesses of Heart), Riku was vulnerable due to his flaw. It is also why later, Sora turns into a Shadow, when he uses the Dark Keyblade.

Sidetrack over though, Riku lost Kingdom Key when he chose Darkness and to go things alone in desperation rather than working and believing in his friend. He lashed out at Sora instead and so the Kingdom Key became connected to Sora, choosing him over Riku at that point. Hope this helps explain it and shows the signs through the game that elude to Riku was initially the Keyblade's intended wielder, but he blew it so the Keyblade switched owners permanently.

But why the Awakening for Sora? That is given to keyblade masters, yet it is used on Sora. If Sora were just an "Ordinary boy" like you say he was, why was he given the Awakening ahead of time? Riku was there on the island, yet Sora got all the visions and promises from a weird voice. How can that be explained away?

You can not try to explain it by saying that the keyblade knew Riku would not be on the island, so it gave Sora the Awakening then and there as if the keyblade knew Riku would be absent, it would go to where Riku would be, not to Sora. Besides, Riku and Sora vanished simultaneously. Why did the keyblade rescue Sora and not Riku? I don't buy the "He had Darkness" reason, as it had no problem with leaping to him in Hollow Bastion, nor did Master Xehanort's keyblade object to darkness and Riku actually got a keyblade later, when he was even more steeped in darkness!

In my opinion, the reason Riku could take the keyblade was because of strength of heart. It is my belief that anyone could snatch the keyblade, provided they had enough heart. Riku shows this by catching and using Oblivion against Roxas in Another side, Another story. The main reason it doesn't happen is because Sora and Riku have almost equal strength of heart, far surpassing all but Mickey. This meant that the keyblade flew to the island and judged Sora to be stronger, so gave him the Awakening a few days before the danger struck. When Sora needed the keyblade, it came to him and stuck with him.

In Traverse town, they were of equal strength. One might have been stronger. Who knows. Riku managed to take it, but gave it back without conflict.
Later in Hollow Bastion, Riku broke Sora's faith and built an iron will using his friendship with Kairi. He took the keyblade forcefully. Sora reclaimed it a while later by drawing upon the power of his friend's hearts, easily toppling Riku. So far, no one else has managed to take it from him.

Works for me, and solves my problems.

Is that true!? Can you confirm the info at all? If thats true though, Terra would have to still be alive in KH2 (when he got his Keyblade). Riku's Keyblade in KH1 was Xehanort's Heartless' Keyblade.

I never said that Sora was an ordinary boy. I said that Riku was the intended Keyblade wielder for Kingdom Key and that he saw the door because of this. I believe Sora and Riku both had the Awakening Dream to some extent because Riku says he does not 'fear the Darkness' which was in the Awakening that Sora had. Sora also seems to have a Keyblader within him which would be Ven's spirit to some degree, hence later there is Roxas. This may have been Ven awakening him too, sensing the incoming Darkness. Obviously Sora had to be 'unique' enough to be given the Kingdom Key in Riku's absense. I was explaining more on Riku, so I did not go into things on just Sora or the essay would have been longer.

Riku was sent to Hollow Bastion, probably by Xehanort's Heartless interceding since both did go through together and he turned up missing. The plan was kind of open that Riku would move on to where he could be used since the Door to Darkness is on Hollow Bastion. That would be my guess anyway as to why Sora remained on Destiny Islands and Riku did not. Sensing the Heartless, perhaps the Keyblade materialized after this but again, Riku was not there for it, so Sora, being that he was a worthy candidate was given it instead. The Keyblade, whether it went to Sora's hand or not, was meant initially to go to Riku. Nomura states that in an interview.

In Traverse Town, Riku did not even seem to 'intentionally' take the Keyblade if you watch the scene. He held his hand out and the Keyblade disappeared from Sora's grip and ended up in Riku's hand. This implies the Keyblade was truly meant to be with Riku but that Sora was a person worthy enough to use it until it should come to be taken by the true intended wielder. Note that Riku tossed it back to Sora willingly and so Sora was able to keep it again. If Riku had walked off with it then, that would have been a different story, but he did not because he thought it was Sora's.

Riku also took it with intention in Hollow Bastion. He lost it because he chose Darkness and to go it alone rather than trusting and going with his friends. Sora believed his power was from his friends and their combined might together and trust. Riku was made to be very confused because of lies told to him and also scenes with Sora did not dispel the lies because Sora did not realize what to say or what was happening to Riku and also did not know he had Kairi's Heart within him. Riku's Heart was weakened because he was full of despair, frustration and confusion. It was at this point, as 'Ansem' told him, that he had a weakness in Heart and Sora's Heart was stronger so he won the Keyblade. Feeling no other options were available, he gave into 'Ansem' after that. Riku's 'intentions' were good though his way of going about things was not. However, because he knew he could not trust Maleficent and others there, who he did call out a couple times, he also forgot to trust in his friend Sora and did not want to trust in anyone, but instead 'power'.

As for breaking Sora's will by using his connection to Kairi...no. Riku was mad at Sora because he did not feel Sora was trying to even -help- Kairi but instead was palling around with Donald and Goofy, his new friends that replaced Riku in his life (by what Maleficent had him believe and Sora didn't exactly dismiss solidly enough for Riku's validation) so that they could hunt for the King. Think of it this way. Riku was having to knowingly use what allies he could to find Kairi how he could and try to acquire her Heart because he felt she was in great danger.

Look back in the game some.

    - Sora, Riku and Kairi were on DI. Riku teases Sora some to get him to ask out Kairi, seeing as he knew they had crushes on one another. Sora is shy and well, thinks it's lame. However, he does feel love for her and even shows jealousy towards Riku.

    - Riku at Traverse Town encounters Sora after Maleficent takes him there by his insistence to see his friend. She tells him he has found others and Riku is no longer needed. Riku goes and confronts Sora and has some over-confidence to hide his fear that she really is speaking the truth and that Sora has replaced him. They talk and Sora asks if Riku can go with them. Donald -utterly- refuses the notion and Sora just comes back with a peaceful negotiating line which is not enough to convince Riku that Maleficent's words were a lie. He ends up leaving because of it.

    - Riku there also asked where Kairi was and thought she might be with Sora. Finding out Sora did not have Kairi and he's 'palling around' with two people where one adamantly refuses to let him go along...doesn't make Riku think differently either.

    - Riku meets Sora after talking with Captain Hook and also in Monstro. Hook tells Riku that to dive into Darkness is basically madness but Riku feels he has no choice. He does -NOT- know that Sora had a vision of Kairi in Traverse Town or things may have turned out different. Sora and he don't really have time to 'explain things' and Riku, having found Kairi, tries to help her on her own and takes care of her, feeling that Sora has forsaken his friends as he also has more Darkness awakened in him again by Maleficent.

    - Riku leaves there and is exhausted and Darkness is eating away at him inside and Maleficent warns him to not use Darkness so much or it will consume him. He becomes even more emotionally burdened by this. Think of how desperate Anakin was to save Padme and how the Dark Side was corrupting him and we can see a relation to what was happening to Riku.

So really, by the time Sora shows up at Hollow Bastion, after going around with Donald and Goofy and helping worlds etc, things do not look so good through the corrupted and very frustrated Riku's eyes. He at that time said things he would never say such as the two were always competing etc and he was making them out to be enemies because he was messed up. Think of how if you are really angry and upset at someone, you might say words that later you realize they were brought on by very negative emotions. Many people do that at very heated times in their lives. He believed at that point that Sora did -not- care so much about Kairi and he was also envious because he knew he had the short end of the stick all along. He knew he had done some bad things but felt pressured to do them while Sora was out saving worlds and had not received the blows Riku had and Riku was emotionally falling apart. His weakness was wanting to be needed and it was very exploited.

This is why at the end, Riku realized he was wrong and that he had to let go of his needs and expectations and do the right thing, letting Sora carry on and he also said 'Take care of her' because that was his way of saying he was letting a lot go and no longer held the same weakness. He could let them go to lead their lives. It is also why in KH2 he wanted to help his friends but earnestly was doing so because he was not sure if he would go back with them or not. He just wanted to make things right.

Riku was the intended Keyblade wielder all along. It doesn't mean Sora was not also destined for something too. But Riku took wrong turns and fell hard for it and mostly out of naivete. Sora, being more naive than Riku and a person that follows his Heart a lot more than Riku does, was fortunate that he had such good fortune doing so. It is though one of the reasons Riku admired his friend so much. Because though he misses very obvious clues and such, his heart for the most part is good and he can trust in it.
