The name comes from the title of the first book, Megami Tensei, which can be translated to Reincarnation of the Goddess. All of these books do take many things from Japanese mythology, but they're primarily made up of the author's original ideas with a few gods and demons mixed in. The books never made it out of Japan, but you can find an extremely good translation of all three books here. I would absolutely suggest reading them because they're absolutely brilliant.

Where did it say that Folklore is the father of the Shin Megami Tensei series? It says that Kouji Okada is the father of the Shin Megami Tensei series. Besides that, it was released way after Megami Tensei was first released in 1987. My fun fact is correct.

 

Both of ours are correct.
Hence the Creator of the game is the father meaning the game is as well.
Yours is more accurate though.

 

But how can Folklore be the father of Megami Tensei (and, by extension, Shin Megami Tensei) if it came out 20 years after Megami Tensei? If anything, Shin Megami Tensei is the father of Folklore.

According to every summary and reviews it is.
Maybe they mixed it up?

It's very simple. 2007 came after 1987. Therefore, Folklore (released in 2007) came after Megami Tensei (1987) and was made by the father of Shin Megami Tensei, Kouji Okada. They obviously got it wrong, which made you get it wrong too.
