Yesh the whole Hogwarts design your own character prequel thing would work well.
Because the main series is over and the chance of a spin-off series of novels is about %0.01 a spin-off game world work very well.

Or when James and Co. were?

Regardless of when the game is set I think the character should be either in Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff because otherwise the subplot of Voldemort's rise to power would become a mainplot due to the whole Slytherin/Gryffindor rivalry...
