I got a jury summons in the mail it seems. 21-years old and already having to fill that crap out for my first time. Worst part is that it's on a day I have off and I usually do school. Maybe I'll get lucky and it gets canceled though. Plus, filling in that I attend a higher level institution might make me exempt, so here's praying

I just ask them to postpone it until a later date, and I end up never getting called in.

Handing in a copy of your school schedule usually gets you excused. Sometimes the whole thing gets cancelled. Or, if you get called in anyways, do what I did and lie through your teeth about why you can't be part of the jury.

Too bad they only give you one postpone, so if you end up getting that second call, you're out of luck

Well, considering 3 of my classes are online and the other is hybrid, not sure a class schedule is going to do me much good. Also, I'd like to not take my chances and get in trouble with the government about why I can't do jury duty. Though I do slightly have the temptation to say I can't do it because I'm not of sound mind and good morale just for kicks.

Can't get in trouble for something nobody can prove that you are lying about.

Say that you have some form of bias to the case, then they can't let you be part of the jury.

Or just do the school schedule thing. That works too.

That's basically how I'm thinking of it. It's not like I want to be that one person that gets the bad luck of being penalized for lying about something and actually getting in trouble.
Plus, you do get paid for it. Maybe I can somehow take my school work with me and do it. It's in about 2 months anyways, so it's a while still

Moving between two different states every couple of years keeps that from happening.

So you want to get out of jury duty

If you end up going to the Jury Empaneling, this is what I've understood from Law:

Lawyers never want anyone too smart on the Jury. I don't know what you've in school for but depending on the subject that'll help.

Like Misty said if you are able to even make up a bias or a reason why you shouldn't be there that they wouldn't catch you lying about (personal feelings etc) you should be good.

If all else fails, ask them about jury nullification (basically it's when you personally believe that the person shouldn't get punished even if they committed a crime even though it's illigeal, say drug possession for weed. It's basically ****ing any evidence and going with your feeling.) This goes back to you being too smart, and a lawyer doesn't want you to go by feelings either unless they're using emotions of witnesses or whatever in order to tug at you, whether it's the defense or the crown, and you'll get taken out of there real quick.

I personally would love to sit on a jury but that's just me

I just want to toss in that it's all well and good to get out of jury duty when you have a valid reason to, but if you're at all disturbed by some of the bullshit that goes on in our judicial system, jury duty is a (small) way to do something about it. There's no reason to dodge it out of laziness.

I don't give a crap either way. I told my mom that I hope to get a murder case too. Those kinds of things don't really disturb me, and might pique my interest more than a civil case

That's the kind of stuff you don't say out loud, or think in the first place.

My sister is a big fan of crime shows and thought the same thing. There's a big difference between television and real life. The lawyers are also very aggressive in these cases because they don't want people who will be intimidated. I'm not saying don't do it but be aware that it's not going to be like Netflix Original Series Making a Murderer. These are real people who (potentially) took the life of another real person.

I know, but civil things will put me to sleep, it doesn't interest me enough. I know it's dark, but I've seen some dark stuff, and I'm not talking about on tv shows. You should have seen some of the pictures of the dead bodies that came up on a computer screen at a morgue during a tour I took once at a police station in colorado. Granted they weren't try to show us the pictures, but when they turned on the computer to show us how it worked, well, let's just say the little kids didn't notice.
That's up to me, not anyone else.
