I've been staying up-to-date with the news on TV for the last few hours, and they said basically the same thing.

The hurricane is all wide or something; therefore, it's not easy for it to get stronger, but at the same time, it's not easy for it to get weaker.

I believe they said something about hurricanes usually being more "tight / compact", but Irene is like all over the place.

So far in NY it's not much. Just a bit of rain, though the wind acts up from time to time. >>
I wonder how tomorrow is gonna turn out though. Tomorrow's weather is supposed to be pretty bad. All transportation has been shut down, busses, trains. Highways are closed. I've never seen anything like this in NY before and I've lived here my whole live. >.<

So far, it looks like it's focused on more coastal regions up further north. I'm in Western NY and haven't gotten any rain or wind yet. :x

That being said, 300 miles wide? I hope it starts to deteriorate faster, but that seems... :/
    Please stay safe guys. :c

I'm getting hit pretty bad right now and the hurricane's not actually here yet. Very heavy rain, streets are flooding, crazy wind and lightning, and my power's flickering. They weren't exaggerating this too much on the news it seems, if nothing's hit you yet definitely pay attention to your local news.
My dog is doing stuff like staying under tables and in corners so I'm taking that as a sign that the worst of this is yet to come. I do have enough supplies to last me a few days but yeah, power's probably not gonna last too much longer.

Writing this from my tablet since we keep getting power bumps and I don't want to fry my laptop. I saw rainfall around 4 this morning, and we've seen wind gusts at 35 mph here. We still have power, it has only gone out once and that was for two minutes tops.

Looks like the eye will reach here about 2ish. Also looks like I won't have work tomorrow, the city I work in has lost power and that might include the daycare.

It's pretty bad here. So bad that I had to knock off work.

the worst of the storm came last night around midnight, but it wasn't bad for my area one bit. it was just a long downpour and that was about it. i feel bad for people who have to deal with flooding though.

The storm isn't that bad in New York right now. My part of town didn't lost power but I think the other side might have. The worst part was probably around 3-4 am, but after that I'm not sure cuz i passed out asleep xD

Came through my neck of the woods CT earlier today. It certainly died down from what I understood it to be from the radio reports and weather channel updates. Really, the only thing that was somewhat out of the norm was how much rain it brought along with it when it came through. The wind and the rest of the storm were actually pretty much what I've grown accustomed to in this part of the country. No worse than most other storms I've seen. It might have also helped that I slept through most of it. Though I must admit, I was more concerned when my town was put under a tornado warning back in 2010.

Even if damage hasn't been all too significant, this has still been a pretty big benchmark, when it's considered how much was done to prepare for it (I mean, all of NYC being pretty much shut down was incredible in and of itself).

    Okay, here's what went down.

Not long after I posted my last message, the power went out. The power stayed out until roughly 4:30 this morning.

In that timeframe (other than go utterly mad due to lack of light to do ANYTHING) the two sump pumps we had in the house failed, as they couldn't work without power. As a result, we had to constantly bail out one of them every hour before it flooded. We couldn't get to the other pump as it was in a crawlspace under the addition none of us could reach. We had no choice but to leave it alone and lay down towels to wick up floodwater.

We formed a "bucket brigade", having my dad fill buckets of water for us to take upstairs and dump into the bathtub to drain. It would take us an hour to go down one inch, and it would fill up again in half the time. Meanwhile a puddle is spreading from the other side of the (did I mention finished and furnished?) basement. By 7 pm it was too dark to see safely, so to use a terrible expression we threw in the towel. That is, we covered the entire floor with towels, dirty linens, blankets...anything we could find. Then we took every large plastic container we could find and bailed into them. The plan was to do this, hope the power came back, and when it did slowly add the water back into the whole with the sump pump and have it fired back outside and away from the foundation.

Didn't happen that way. We filled 5 large trash bins (like the ones in city parks), 4 tall kitchen trash bins, 2 coolers, and about a half dozen other buckets with water hoping to be able to work out our plan. Since we didn't get power until this morning, the basement flooded anyway. 95% of the floor is covered in water, including the closet under the stairs. Stepping on the carpet on the finished side got you water up to your ankles. On the unfinished side, the water reached all the way to the washer and dryer, and a good majority of stuff that was on the floor is now ruined unless we can find a way to salvage it.

Nothing left to do now except ShopVac the basement of all the floodwater and see what can be saved.

    That really sucks.

Your house may have gotten flooded, but all of you survived, which is the most important thing.

    I'm glad you're safe.

That's how I'm trying to look at it here. There were a few times I would look out the window and the trees that do line our property were swaying in the wind, and I'd think to myself "Don't you dare fall on the house." And there's still people here in town who haven't had their power turned back on yet.

I really wish I had remembered to drag a camera downstairs so I could have snapped a pic of all our "rain barrels".

My friend is over in America at the moment and so I was quite worried, luckily she's okay and everyone I've spoken to is okay on here. I saw pictures in the newspaper of people in New York enjoying the rain and playing hockey or something outside, they looked quite happy so I'm assuming that no horrible damage was done in NY. As for the rest of the USA, I have heard some terrible stories like the damage caused but it seems not many lives were lost (as far as I know)

I live on the coast of NY and this crap was really blown out of proportion.

So, the power went out for me on Sunday at like 1 in the morning, my basement got flooded with a half or quarter inch of water, some of the roads got flooded, but that was about it. My power went back on yesterday.

Overall, it wasn't too bad. I entertained myself by playing on my PSP.

so I'm just wondering. If Irene is down on the coast of Florida or whatever, how are people in New York getting affected by it?

Hurricane Irene moved up to New York. Cause, you know...hurricanes move...and not stay in the same spot.

I figured it was still in the south east. When did it move so quickly? I thought it was moving slowly
