Plot: A hapless young Viking who aspires to hunt dragons becomes the unlikely owner of a young dragon himself, and learns there may be more to the creatures than he assumed.

Starring: Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Craig Ferguson, Gerard Butler

I posted a thread for this movie a while ago, but the old thread's title had a mistake in it and I didn't feel like bumping it.

I'm excited for this one. I love the casting choice. I wouldn't normally peg Jay for voice acting (his voice is kinda... I don't know... bland? Not really, but I can't think of a better word). But he seems to fit the character really well. Then there's some awesome Scottish power with Butler and Ferguson. It looks really good. ::L:

I want to see this cause I'm a little obsessed with dragons. I have two problems with it straight away, the dragon looks ******ed IMO and guess what, it's another film IN 3D.

Their not trying to make the 3D seem like something new, a lot of movies are switching to 3D so their movie does get recorded and stolen. And it overall just makes it look better.

But the dragon does look ******ed.

The movie seems pretty good, not sure if it worth to go out to see though. >.>

i remember reading this book when i was younger and i remember it so clearly.

sure, it will probably be a wonderful movie, but adaption wise, it will be HORRENDOUS.

I never seen a movie so badly adapt something, like in the book, the dragons had a TOTALLY different role, they were actually buddies with the humans instead of being the enemy, and Hiccup was a chiefs son who did NOT want to fight, and his father was the one who urged him to go fight and train a dragon for himself.

but eh, i probably will see it anyways. it looks good xD

I agree, it looks more like a salamander with wings than a dragon. But keep in mind that even though it's computer animated, it's Dreamworks, and Dreamworks likes to keep things cartoon-y.

My goshness, it's actually really quite good. The animation was well done, the 3D scenes were incredible, and the voice acting was awesome. It was really funny as well, although some jokes I wouldn't imagine I would understand as a child.

    See it. :=D:

oh, so it comes from a book! Interesting.

Anyway that dragon looks so weird. His face is hilarious. I'm not sure about this film though. Well, there is always the DVD...

oh trust me, it is amazing and i want to see it again in theaters. It is so great c:

the ending was really shocking, in animated movies, you dont really see the protagonist get deep scars or anything, but when i saw Hiccups prosthetic, it was really an eye widener; but at the same time it was cute for the fact Toothless lost his left tail thingy and Hiccup lost his left leg. I know, right? The ending took me completely off guard. I think it was pretty brave for the creators to have Hiccup loose his leg. You don't see stuff like that in kid's movies. But I loved the reality of it. You don't fall hundreds of feet from the back of a dragon and have a completely happy ending. xD
I just love the image when Toothless is helping Hiccup out of the house, and you can see Hiccup's prosthetic leg and Toothless's lame tail beside each other. c:

I will never get over the sheer awesomeness of this movie. Everything from beginning to end caught all of my attention. The art work, the story, the emotion, everything.
Character development was good enough for the depth of the story. Hiccup, obviously being the main character, had a great sense of connection with the audience and reality. Despite the fact that his story takes place so long ago in a time that most people cannot relate to, I think people were able to relate to it. I mean, what kid hasn't tried their hardest to impress their parent and failed, but kept trying? It's something we all do. Hiccup just did it with a dragon.
Another thing I really, super-duper loved about this movie was the dragons. Dragons have always been very dear creatures to me and it never ceased to make me mad when movies only portrayed them as killing machines that were slayed by "heroes." I was touched to finally see a story that portrays dragons as beings with hearts and souls. That's the best part of the movie.

The ending was a shock to me. I knew something had to happen to Hiccup from that fall. I was on the edge of my seat when he fell from Toothless's back, freaking out, and hoping that Hiccup would be okay. Then when I saw Toothless on the ground, curled up, I thought Hiccup was either dead or missing and Toothless was hurt. I'm sure I wasn't the only one in the theater who was crying. It was so easy to form a bond with the two of them throughout the film. That prosthetic leg that Hiccup receives at the ending made my jaw drop. It's an amazing battle scar, and a greater proof of his friendship with Toothless. They are literally made for each other now.
I think everyone who has seen the movie will agree that the most powerful scene is when Hiccup has to lean on Toothless to walk outside and you see Toothless's tail and Hiccup's leg next to each other.
Overall, I would recommend this movie for everyone and anyone who wants to see a great story of friendship and acceptance.
    5 stars!

If you're looking for a dragon-friendly movie, I would definitely recommend DragonHeart to you if you haven't seen it yet. 8D

And I agree, the ending was probably one of the most moving scenes from an animated movie that I've ever seen. :')

I saw the movie after a really crappy day of work. It really made my day. I kept on asking my mom to see it on 3D because I heard how good it is on the third dimension. So beautiful and well-made. Surprisingly technical, considering the children's movies I've seen for this day are so full of bathroom humor and not nearly as good as I saw when I was a kid.

It made me feel like a little kid again sitting in the theater. Best movie of the year, if not this decade.

DragonHeart, huh? I will look into that. Thanks. =)

I saw the movie again today [with a friend that hadn't seen it before] and it was even better the second time!
This time around, I noticed more about Gobber. It seems to me that he was friend of Stoik since they were young boys. All the remarks he makes throughout the film suggest a deep connection between the two. And that is proved when
Gobber stays with Stoik to fight the Green Death.
I think there's more to learn about Gobber, and I have to say that I'm interested to learn it. I'd like to see some history (dare I say flashbacks?) of those two.

You can watch DragonHeart here: http://www.megavideo.com/?v=YRG918L3. It's quite 90s-ish, but I still can't help but like it. :=D:

I agree, Gobber and Stoik seemed to have a really close bond that I think should have been explored a little more. Perhaps they saved each others' lives on several occasions. I would have loved to see a flashback. :'D

I looked at the trailer on YouTube and it looks good! Thanks for the link. =)

Another character I thought could have used a bit more was the elder of Berk. She just shook her head, nodded, and smiled. I thought she'd at least say something. Maybe it was a way to add age and wisdom to her, but I didn't go for it. Eh, it's probably just a personal thing for me. Anybody else agree?

I imagine the elder would have had more of a role in the books. It did seem kind of weird that we didn't really see much more of her, other than her nodding and shaking her head. I think her role as the elder was kind of undermined by Stoick being known as the leader, which might have been really confusing if they went into further detail about. Maybe? :/
    Stoick > Elder?
    or Elder > Stoick? @_@
