Question how do you get the colour in an avatar...

to look like this:


i dont care about the animation i just want some advice or something on how to get the colours like they are in the avatar.

 

..You..play with the color adjustment tools in a photo editing program?

EDIT: Or personally, sometimes I overlay colored/gradient layers on images in Photoshop.

 

It looks like there might be a Black to White Gradient Map set on Lighten on a low opacity and then some sort of red adjustment.
