His Dark Marterials Ok, so for those of u that dont know what im talking about, its the Golden Compass, the Subtle Knife, and the Amber Spyglass i found this series when i saw the movie....then i was hooked... so i rushed to the books store adn bought the 3 in 1 book with all 3 of the books i love the blend of fantasy and the whole poking fun and the Catholic church (im a Catholic by the way) so its just a really good book...im almost done with the last one
The whole theory behind it was really interesting I thought it was amazing lol in the The Amber Spyglass I read it and then lent it to my friend and when she got to the part about Lyra sharing the fruit she read the description which was like "A small red fruit" and she just blurtted out strawberry and I just stared at her and said keep going...
These books were really great. I wish the Golden Compass movie wouldn't have softened up things and just gone right after the book it came from. No matter what, these books would offend when being made a movie so they might as well have put forth the true thing. These books are great if people just give them a chance.
I am not too sure about these books. I think i've read all 3 of them twice, and i just don't know if i like them or not. right now i'm gonna go with what my friend said to me one day about them. The first book was great, the second book was okay, and the third book was just kinda blah.
I read the series several years back (though I ended up reading the Subtle Knife first, then Golden Compass, then the third one). They're VERY good books, a nice blend of adventure and action, and best of all they make you think. The books are somewhat anti-Catholic (being Catholic myself, I don't mind) but open minded people shouldn't have a problem.
Why do the Americans call it the Golden compass The author (philip Pullman) is British && he named it northern Lights, as it is known in Britain so why do the Americans have to change it? Im sorry but things like that really annoy me. I do love the books - They have a wonderfull plot line I have to say i like the second book better than the first though.
I just finished the Amder Spyglass and went: "wow but it's a bit of an anticlimax" What did you think of the books on a whole and do you agree.
It's just frustrating. "Oh, I love you and want to marry you and want to live my life with you but i can't disobey one tiny bit and leave just one window open when the spectre it made will be destroyed anyway and there's pleanty of dust. So I'll just leave you forever and probably die of depression and go beck to my normal life but we could sit on the same bench at the same time on midsummers night every year and that will suddenly make evrything better." >.<
... lol. Still, the first two books are great. Let's just pretend the ending never actually happened. BTW, did anyone notice that they changed the name of the first book? It used to be "Northern Lights", now it's "The Golden Compass". The new title makes more sense, but I hate when that happens!!
Actually, it was always the Golden Compass outside Britain. When Phillip Pullman sent the manuscript to the publisher he was going to call the seiries the Golden Compasses but he mistakenly forgot to send the title Northern Lights to the American editor and all she saw was the Golden Compass, so the title stuck. And anyway that doesn't effect me because I live in Britain.
Yeah, I live in Ireland so it's the same for me... I should really re-read that series over the summer. It's been years since I finished it.
i felt empty after reading it...i was like YEA LAST BOOK! and then after i was like...uhhh...is there more? did i miss somthing? ugh V.V
yeah the ending kind of sucked bad damn the dead close that window and open one for Lyra and Will if u think about it they are a bit young for serious love, so theyd probz grow tired of each other when they were older lol
