    Buu... Encoding is evil...

Accursed video that isn't lossless: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uT9qoQIiYkY

DX RAWR! 8 tries to get it looking like that and it's still too dark!

I just edit the video after it's captured. Fiddle with filters on virtualdub then re-encode (ex. brightness/contrast).

Cheap video capturing methods affect the quality as well. I personally don't like my method, but it cost me nothing.

Eh... I encode with VirtualDub then I have to convert it using a different program (to make it WMV since Youtube has this weird thing where it makes everything not synced if you use AVI) which kicks all the filters/edits down the drain >|

'kicks all the filters/edits down the drain' as in it just darkens it again? Because it would be impossible for them to 'remove' a filter you already encoded with virtualdub.

Besides, is encoding with VirtualDub not enough? Why do you need to convert it again afterward?

EDIT: Saw your edit. Personally I think .wmv is a piece of crap. I haven't had any sound/video sync problems with youtube when I upload .mpeg or .mp4 files.

And veoh > youtube in terms of video quality. They also don't have any video length limit.

It just automatically darkens the videos or makes them fuzzy or whatnot.

Correction: "Youtube has this weird thing where it makes everything not synced if use AVI"

At least my videos it doesn't stay synched.

    Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awdWt6zWq98

One of my better quality AVIs (torched by youtube but w/e)... X| The timing is off by like half a second and it bothers me.

I like Veoh too. They're having this weirdo issue with the whole "5 min preview" thing though so I'm avoiding that site till they come to a decision.

Well, I personally avoid using .wmv so I couldn't really give you any insights on how to use that format.

My advice: use veoh for your videos, but if you *have* to use Youtube and its crappy video-butchering ways, try uploading it as a .mpeg format, or .mp4 if possible (YouTube recommends/claims the best format to upload to their site is mp4).

Maybe I'll try MP4 next time. If not, I'm stuck with WMV.

It's hard to find a good codec that won't butcher the subtites as well since they're a seperate file and I have to encode them onto the video using VirtualDub or meGUI. The latter being much easier to work with.

    I'm practically going through the process that Anime Fansubbers go through to make these. ^^;;

I've done fansubbing (I actually solo-jobbed the entire CCS Movie 2) so I've know what you're talking about. Personally I've only used VDub to burn subtitles onto the video, and I haven't really had problems with sync.

Have you tried saving the entire audio stream separately, converting it to .mp3 then encoding the video with the .mp3 file afterward? Not only does that cut filesize significantly but it helps with syncing issues in many cases since VBR can be a pain in the ***.

Yeah. I did save it with the audio stream seperately once for a Tokyo Mew Mew video I did. Didn't go too well so I didn't really stick with it.

It can still go out of sync if you encode the .mp3 file on a different bitrate than the video. That's where most people screw up.

Please explain. What's this 5 minute preview?

For videos longer then 5 minutes (it varies from video to video from my experience; typically it applies to anime and movies I've seen there), they just show you a small 5 minute preview of it and you have to use the external program "VeohTV" to watch the rest. Typically, it's in horrible quality while you're streaming it through the program unless you download it directly from the site which is something I'm not willing to do.

My hard drive is full enough already.

You're mistaken. That's for videos exceeding 20 minutes. I uploaded a 13 minute gameplay video weeks ago without any problem, and didn't have to use VeohTV to view it.

Even then, I'm not too sure. There are many anime eps uploaded in full (21~23/24 minutes) and they don't require you to use VeohTV. Search up some anime, for instance; much better quality. <.<

    Ah... 20 minutes.

That explains a lot. Thanks for the info. =]
