Well, I've been thinking about this for a while, ever since I saw a video of .hack GU. The games looks great, so I was thinking about getting them, I just wanted to know how good they were. I also wanted to know how good the original .hack games were and if I should get them first. I would like to try GU if it's good enough, but I don't want to be clueless about it or feel like I'm missing something. Should I play the originals first, to better understand GU? Or does it not matter?

Well, the original series is all well and good, but G.U. is more beginner friendly.

Play G.U first and then project .hack series.

Not only that, but it would help a lot if you watch the anime's. THe manga's aren't as nescasary, but they are entertaining

I always find it interesting to think about though "What if I played .hack//G.U b4 project .hack?"

that is really your choice though, becuz if u play project .hack, then the .hack//G.U moments are more chilling

Well, what really interested me in the games was .hack//Sign, which I watched most of the episodes of that and really liked it. And as I said in my previous post, I already bought Infection.

well, the original .hack games, the gameplay isn't really anything to write home about, it's kinda slow at times, but i like the story which is a continuation of the anime btw. as for G.U. the protaginast is kinda a ****** which can really be annoying at times. but the gameplay as drasticaly improved whihc i like. the story is good until the 3rd and last game where it gets a little dull.

also, it's not NESSACARY to play the first series to enjoy the G.U series but it's recommended.

It'd be better, in my opinion, if you started with //INFECTION and then played through the entire series. You'll gain a better appreciation for the storyline in G.U. (it's nothing major, but it's definitely nice to know the plot of the first four games before G.U.), and the battle system isn't as fun in the originals, so you can get the not-as-fun stuff outta the way first.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Well, the two games I bought, the first one of each set, were shipped today, so I should be getting them on Wednesday.

it's better to play the first series first, but that's just how it goes in chronological order, it isn't exactly nessacary though.

Yup, I like doing things in the order they are intended, but I also wanted to try both.

well, the pros of the games are: the original series has a better story, the GU series has MUCH better gameplay.

Yeah, that's what I've heard. I've been watching the cutscene's of both series, just to get a feel of it, and I like it. I've also seen most of .hack//Sign, and I liked that too. I heard that it was the prequel to the games.

oooh, i loved .hack//sign, that's my first anime, that's the show that got me into anime. it was the only anime i ever liked besides Full Metal Alchemist. and yes, the anime is what happened before the games. according to Xaldin (the admin) there is also going to be a dot hack GU movie as well, it looks like it just depicts the story of the game though.

Yeah, I saw some videos in Japanese of it. I think it's already out there. It's called .hack//GU Trilogy. It is infact the story of the game. But it looks like there will be some differences, like a B-st form, which Haseo uses to fight Ovan with in this scene here.

    Yeah, it's also been confirmed for both a European and an American release, so it'll also come out over in the States and Europe...The movie was good, but most people thought it didn't live up to the games... although I think this is a no-brainer, I mean...Three games in one movie?! And people were sitting there all upset that the movie's story wasn't some kind of masterpiece. >>;

Oh and also, there's a good deal of .hack manga and light novels out too, including Legend of the Twilight (takes place after the original games, it's a bit...Uh...Silly), A.I. Buster and A.I. Buster II which were both pretty good IMO, Another Birth which is a novelization of the events of the original .hack game series from another point of view (Black Rose's), XXXX which is the manga equivalent of the original .hack games, and .hack//G.U. + which is an alternate retelling of G.U.'s story.

I played G.U. before the .hack project and I just could NOT get used to the wierd gameplay and camera angles in //Infection/Mutation/Outbreak/Quarantine, so perhaps it's good you're getting both...Also I always felt like G.U. had a really gorgeous art style, it's a combination of cel shading and traditional 3D and it just looks really nice. o.o; Just putting that out there...

Um anyway, in terms of anime, you've already seen SIGN (which is probably one of my top three animes of all time, it was wonderful), and personally I wouldn't recommend any more than that...The art in //ROOTS, the prequel to G.U., had a MAJOR quality control breakdown half-way through and got continually worse until I almost had to stop watching, and then well, there's just Legend of the Twilight. If you think you can handle the art issues though (please don't tell me that was just me .___. ), ROOTS provides a lot of background on Haseo, the main character of G.U., and why he's so freaking MEAN TO EVERYONE IN G.U. .
    XD

Anyhow. Let us know if you like them.

yea i didn't really like dot hack//ROOTS very much either, not because of the art issues, but i just never found it very interesting.
