Well, thank you for reiterating my point. However, saying that they are great despite being generic is simply trying to justify listening to generic mainstream crap that was probably written and recorded to satisfy the mainstream and make money.

    <.< I ain't tryin' to justify anything >.>
And well, you need money to survive in this world. You need money to make your music. You need money to make the music public, to make it successful. There's hardly anyone at the top of the music industry who hasn't sold out at some point in their career.
And mainstream is, well, who/what you're trying to sell your music to. If you can't make your music likable for a good chunk of people, odds are you can't keep making music for a living, no matter how talented or original you are.
    It's a fucked up industry.

    Uh, huh, sure you aren't.

    OK, no argument here.

No you don't. Any moron with a guitar and a computer can record anything they want with free software like Audacity.
No you don't. Any idiot who can use MySpace can set up a band website with options to let people download their work.

And notice how little originality is in the chart topping acts? They copy each other because that's what sells. Its lazy, it takes little work and it makes money for the record companies.

Death metal is trying to sell to the mainstream?

Incidentally, many of my favorite bands DON'T make music for a living. And if they do, they don't live the glorious life that celebrities live.

And its the stupid masses that make it into a ****ed up industry. There is plenty of originality out there, its just that people are afraid to move away from hip hop, bubble pop and emo.

Death Cab for Cutie is my personal favorite band, but Ben Gibbard himself is a strong musician with so many side projects that are also great.

<.< I was kiddin', you know...

And how many of these morons/idiots are anything more but a one-hit wonder, or will achieve anything more than 15 minutes of fame?

That was pretty much what I meant. Similarity sells, it's a safe choice for the record companies.

Okay, you got me there <.< But I mainly was talking about pop/rock/hip-hop anyways...

I don't think I've even heard of most of the bands you listen to (if I'm thinking of the right person), and I probably haven't ever listened to any one of them. You pretty much have to devote yourself for music completely if you want to make yourself known.

Stupid masses, alongside greedy b*stards and naïve artist that are easy to manipulate/kick off the record company.

And you think having millions of dollars for music production will somehow change that artists become one-hit wonders?
There is/was tons of One-hit wonders in the mainstream.
Your argument is completly invalid sorry.

    Pfft yeah right
People who devote all their time to music are often completly ignored.
While most Mainstream artists write their songs with close to no work.
    It's true.

I present to you Machinae Supremacy. They did precisely what I said anyone could do. Before being signed, they made a website and put up their work for free. They are a relatively large name in the metal scene now and have even had songs in the game series In The Groove ("Hybrid," "Bouff," "Cryosleep," and "Megascorcher"). Oh, did I mention that over half of thier albums are available for free download?

Indeed. The rare occurance that a band of a non-mainstream genre gets huge is usually because the record company orchestrated the band's success (Name a big name pop act from the 90s), they are a breath of fresh air in a stale era (which is the reason why bands like Tool and Nine Inch Nails became huge during an era where Grunge is king), being mistaken for another genre (Coheed & Cambria is progressive rock, not emo) or out of sheer luck.

If you've never heard of Tarot, Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, 3 Inches of Blood, Blind Guardian, Anvil, Conception, Galneryus, Masterplan or Beyond Fear, I'm not surprised in the least.

    Greedy manipulative *******s, actually.
