So... I need a new graphics card for my computer. Being relatively inexperienced in the field of computer hardware, I have no idea where to get one. Does anyone know where I can find a graphics card for Windows XP that can run Portal? (The minimum is a DirectX® 8.1 level card, if that helps) Thanks!
Well I believe we're up to DirectX11 by now, so one that supports 8 shouldn't be hard to find. Just make sure that you have a PCI Express x16 slot on your motherboard for one. Now, with graphics cards there are tons of options. You should buy one that's inside your price range, but don't skimp on quality. I can't recommend any good companies because I've never bought one, but Amazon and Newegg will give you the best deals.
Look for one that's compatible with your computer, and also one of quality. I have a Laptop so im not able to do that, myself, but still you should.
Amazon... has failed me. So has Staples. Newegg... is confusing me, but I think I'll find something. Thanks! EDIT: One more question: how does one install a graphics card? (and how do I know if my motherboard can support it? Is it just the presence of a PCI x16 slot?)
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=48&name=Desktop-Graphics-Video-Cards http://www.amazon.com/Graphics-Card...rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1260025202&pf_rd_i=193870011 ^ Those links will bring you to the sections on the website that have video cards. The installation is pretty simple, so long as you buy the correct kind. There are three main types: AGP video cards, PCI video cards, and PCI Express video cards. AGP is pretty outdated by now, and considering you're running XP (and I'm assuming it was the original OS on your system), I doubt you have an AGP slot. Even PCI is getting replaced these days by PCI Express cards. Still, if you look, you can find any kind. The key is knowing what you need. Can I ask what the brand name and product number your computer is? Usually the maker will have what sort of slots are open listed on their website.
Let's see... I have a Dimension 3000, so the specs would be here. *begins reading* My God, I've never realized just how out of date my computer is! Fortunately, it looks like it'll be ok with something like this (or, of course, this), but knowing me I may just be looking at the wrong spot on the spec chart.
I'd go with the one from Newegg (though I've never purchased one myself, so I'd wait for a second opinion). The one on Amazon is predominantly for people who want the TV-Out connector; if you're not looking for that, the card won't do you much good. At first I was concerned that you may need a new power supply, though the reviews said that it could run well with older machines so you should be fine. The last thing is that the connector for the monitor on the card is DVI. My computer is about 5 or 6 years old and it came with a VGA monitor, so you'll have to check out yours to see what fits. If yours is a VGA, you can buy a simple VGA to DVI for a few bucks. I can give a link if you need it. Just to help you, the blue one is a VGA, the other one is a DVI if you're not sure about the difference: http://www.dual-display.com/media/dvi-vs-vga.jpg
