I don't want to start a debate like this, though you kinda already did, and I certainly don't want o to sound like I'm defending them, because I'm not, but in this day and age where the quality of visuals has progressed so far, having good visuals does up the quality of something to make it better than it could be if it weren't done with good visuals. Presentation really affects the experience of the game, movie, whatever, and can determine how well something will be received.

Now does that mean that bad visuals = bad game? Of course not, all I'm saying is that better visuals does help make something better, but it's not enough to save it from being terrible if it's story, gameplay, etc. are all bad.

Visuals are definitely important, wouldn't be caught dead saying that, but saying that visuals are 60% of a game is just dumb

This must be why Duke Nukem Forever sucked because its beautiful plot could not compensate for its terrible graphics.

Ghosts are like Santa Clause. They aren't real.

You can't. Ghosts aren't real, and therefore it's impossible for ghosts to be real.

The thing is that I would extend the "good graphics" thing to stylized graphics, which Mario features. Kingdom Hearts, for example, isn't boasting hyper realistic, "oh-my-god-I-can-see-everything-down-to-the-pores-on-their-face" graphics, they're stylized, and it makes for a really nice visual experience and it ages really well. So I agree with Below, presentation is important, but there are so many ways to go about it.

    60% is bullshit though.

Well, think about it. I think this goes even beyond video games. If the cinematography of a movie is beautiful, then people will want to see it more and the movie will get better critical acclaim for it. If the graphics are beautiful, then people will want to play it more and thus the game will get better critical acclaim.

For instance, Journey a just plain gorgeous. However, the gameplay and story by itself severely lacks without the accompanying graphics. God forbid, the Call of Duty games get high scores because the visuals are so realistic and smooth.

Seeing is believing. We make first judgements based on what we first see, right? Like trailers, commercials, and those things. The first thing a reviewer will notice (even though they don't write about it first) is what is visually appealing and how that will affect their time with the rest of the aspects of a game. Granted, this is not true for every game, depending on what the advertisers try to get across to the audience. But for most, I think it's true.

Another example would be Final Fantasy XIII for me. I was visually pleased with most of the character designs, environments, and animations which lead me to believe it was going to be a very pleasing experience for the rest of the game. Even though it gradually went downhill throughout the game in terms of story pacing and gameplay, FFXIII got higher scores than it should because the graphics were close to flawless and helped keep up its sales from its commercials, trailers, and other advertisements.

Lets say a game has holy oh my god visuals, people that look only for graphics and not gameplay, are astonished and amazed, but are disgusted a little after buying the game for the regular new price of a game.

Some games with good graphics have a great story/plot/gameplay, while most games with a what would seem to others as a 'Crappy' or 'horrible' visual apearance, have an astounding gameplay, such as most of the games on the N64, PS2, PS, And many other systems, even the super nintendo, because when said systems came out, they were amazing for their time, and still are, more so then even the xbox or PS3
